Maisons-Alfort Overview
Located in the southeastern suburbs of Paris, Maisons-Alfort is a commune, and a distance of 8.4 kilometers separates it from Paris’ center. As the location of the Alfort National Veterinary School, Maisons-Alfort is well known.
Name
Initially, Maisons-Alfort was known as simply Maisons. Maisons is derived from Medieval Latin Mansiones, which means “the houses.”
The name of Alfort was joined with Maisons during the French Revolution to create the commune. Alfort is named after the manor built there by Peter of Aigueblanche, Bishop of Hereford (England), in the middle of the 13th century. Over time, the name Harefort was corrupted into Hallefort and eventually Alford. The National Veterinary School of Alfort was established several centuries later in the manor and its estate.
History
Alfortville was founded on 1 April 1885 by separating 40% of the territory of Maisons-Alfort.
While Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show performed in Paris in 1905, Buffalo Bill stayed in Maisons-Alfort for two months.
V-2 rockets fired by Lehr und Versuchsbatterie 444 from Petites-Tailles, near Houffalize, in south-east Belgium, landed at Charentonneau on 8 September 1944, killing six people. A V-2 rocket destroyed this building for the first time.
A V-2 rocket from Wassenaar in the Netherlands, launched by 485 Artillerie Abteilung at 6.37 pm, would hit Staveley Road in west London later that day.
