Miroir aux Oiseaux

This romantic scene at Quai Brescon is a typical image on postcards of Martigues. A small rectangular harbor is surrounded by old wooden boats bobbing in the water.

Le Quartier de l’Île

Three canals make up the prettiest section of the city – St. Sébastien, Baussengue, and Galliffet. Provence’s Venice, these hills encircle the Île Brescon, giving it Martigues’ nickname.

Église Sainte-Madeleine-de-l’Île

In that extravagant Italian Baroque style, the church at the end of Canal de Saint Sébastien on Île Brescon is protected as a “historical monument.” A few of the furnishings inside date back to the earliest years of the house, which was completed in 1680.

Côte Bleue

Along this stretch of coast south and east of Martigues, the pale limestone mass of the Estaque Range meets the Mediterranean. Sand beaches are protected from the wind and surf by the rocky cliffs, which give them a rugged appearance.

Parc de Figuerolles

This 131-hectare park is located near the Berre Lagoon and is a popular destination for tourists and Martigues residents. There are small plains and valleys for walking, riding horses, jogging, and mountain biking, all surrounded by scrub and pine forests.

Plage de Sainte-Croix

About ten minutes by car from Martigues center, this tiny but perfectly formed sandy cove is one of Martigues’ four Blue Flag beaches.

Musée Ziem

The museum exhibits fine art in a converted customs barracks in Martigues. Félix Ziem donated several works just before his death at the beginning of the 20th century.

Galerie de l’Histoire

On the ground floor, there is a mini-museum with 500 square meters of exhibits explaining the different phases of the town’s development. The exhibition includes interactive displays, models, artifacts, and photos, all accompanied by descriptions.

Plage du Verdon

Located at the base of a cove several hundred meters inland, it is protected from sea currents and winds. You can rent pedalos and go on a little cruise around the cove on the beach, supervised all summer long, and has ample facilities such as bars and restaurants, volleyball courts, and volleyball courts.

Chapelle Notre Dame des Marins

A place where sailors would pray and leave votive offerings before embarking on journeys in honor of “Our Lady of the Sailors.”
