In the metropolitan area of Paris, Meaux is located in the Seine-et-Marne department in the Île-de-France region of the Seine-et-Marne department. East-northeast of Paris, it is 41.1 km away.

Demographics

Meaux ranked first in the Seine-et-Marne department in 2018, just behind Chelles (55,148 inhabitants in 2018).

Climate

Summers in Meaux are short, comfortable, and partly cloudy, while winters are cold, windy, and mostly cloudy. Temperatures vary from 34°F to 77°F throughout the year, rarely falling below 23°F or rising above 88°F. Mid-June to mid-September is the best time to visit Meaux for warm-weather activities.

History and culture

Meauxians are known as Meldois. Originally, Meaux and Meldois were the names of the Meldi, a Gaulish tribe that inhabited this area of the Marne river valley. Despite the name Iantinum being used by the Romans during the Roman period, the Meldi name persisted and was finally used for the city and its inhabitants.

Historical buildings and monuments in Meaux are primarily located in the old city, inside the old defensive walls, which are still partially preserved today thanks to an essential segment of the original Roman wall. North Quarter (known among the Meldois as Cathedral Quarter) and South Quarter (known among the locals as Market Quarter) are separated by the Marne river. In the North Quarter, there are the Meaux Cathedral, the episcopal palace and its gardens (outlining a bishop’s miter), the old seat of the chapter (le vieux chapitre), some of the defensive walls (as mentioned), some keeps and towers, as well as the archaeological remains of the sanctuary of La Bauve, spanning the Gaulish period (4th, 3rd and 1st centuries B.C.).), the Gallo-Roman period (1st, 2nd, and 3rd centuries A.D.) and the early Christian period (from the 3rd to the 18th centuries, including remnants of the Saint-Faron Abbey, demolished during the French Revolution). In the South Quarter of the old city, there is a historic covered market and the 1235 Canal Cornillon. In 1806, during the Napoleonic era, when the Marne river was impassable due to temporary sandbanks, the Canal de l’Ourcq was constructed.

Sports

The CS Meaux association football club represents the town. There are also many other sports played in Meaux, such as rugby and field hockey, as well as water sports. Sports clubs in Meaux include:

  • Canoeing (mostly practiced on the Canal de l’Ourcq).
  • Scuba diving (the club “Asterina” trains in the city’s swimming pools).
  • Swimming (Club Sportif Meaux Natation).

Transport

Meaux is connected to several national rail lines and the Paris-Est suburban line via Meaux station. Was established in 1849 that a rail line connected Paris and Meaux. In 1890, the SNCF train station was built, which is still in use today.

The Meaux rail station is also home to the city’s central bus station, which is served by more than 30 bus lines serving eastern Paris.

Education

Preschools and elementary schools are available in the commune.

Is Meaux worth visiting?

After all, it’s close to the city of love, has plenty to do, and is a great place to visit if you love eating Brie and mustard (but not necessarily together). Meaux (pronounced ‘mo’) lies to the east of Paris, 45 minutes by train from the center of the city of lights.

What is Meaux known for?

Meaux is famous for its Brie and being one of France’s Art and History towns. In its historic center, a wealth of well-preserved heritage has been preserved from the former episcopal city. Built between the 12th and 14th centuries, the Gothic Saint-Étienne cathedral is a landmark of the town.

Best Things to Do in Meaux (France)

Musée de la Grande Guerre

This museum is one of the world’s leading attractions devoted to the conflict between 1914 and 1918. It was inaugurated on Armistice Day in 2011. Meaux was chosen as the closest point to Paris that the German Army could reach during the war.

Meaux Cathedral

Gothic art scholars will adore the cathedral in Meaux. Due to the slow pace of construction, every phase of French Gothic design is visible, from Early Gothic to Flamboyant.

Musée Bossuet

Located next to the cathedral in Bossuet’s former residence, the episcopal palace, is Meaux’s art and history museum. In the late 1600s, Bossuet resided here, which was developed in stages since the 1100s.

Le Jardin Bossuet

A 17th-century flower garden behind the Episcopal Palace is credited to André Le Nôtre, who worked wonders at Versailles.

Vieux Chapitre

This symbol of ecclesiastical power from the middle ages is located in the back courtyard at the Episcopal Palace, alongside the cathedral.

Remparts de Meaux

The ramparts are around 250 meters long and follow a route plotted during the Gallo-Roman period. They were later renovated and modified in the 14th and 15th centuries when circular defensive towers were added.

Old Centre

Due to Meaux’s elevated status in the 17th and 18th centuries, many refined mansions from this period are privately owned.

Parc du Pâtis

This large and varied natural space lies south of Meaux on a loop in the Marne. The walk along the Marne is complemented by flowery meadows, woods, and ten large ponds, some crossed by cute little bridges.

American Monument

During the First Battle of Marne in 1914, the German Army was stopped outside Meaux. There is now no doubt that this event was a turning point in the early stages of the war, and the USA put up a monument here in 1932 to honor the French troops that died halting the advance.

Brasserie de Meaux

About halfway to Trilport, a few minutes from Meaux center, is a young brewery that is part of the craft beer revolution. In the Brasserie de Meaux, blonde, white, and amber beers are made from ingredients sourced from local cereal farms.
