Metz Overview
Metz features gardens and leafy promenades along the Moselle and Seille rivers in France’s northeastern Grand Est region. Gothic Metz Cathedral is famous for its many stained glass windows, many created by noted artists. A nearby museum displays Roman and Renaissance artifacts. Its undulating roof exhibits contemporary art at the Centre Pompidou-Metz.
Etymology
The tribe of the same name inhabited the city during ancient times, known as the city of Mediomatrici. Divodurum Mediomatricum, which means Holy Village of the Mediomatrici, became Mediomatrix after its incorporation into the Roman Empire. It was given the name “Mettis” in the 5th century A.D., which gave rise to the current spelling, Metz, as well as spellings such as Mès, which are no longer used but reflect how it is pronounced in French (like “mess”).
History
Over 2,000 years of history have been recorded for Metz. It was the oppidum of the Celtic Mediomatrici tribe before Julius Caesar conquered Gaul in 52 B.C. During the Roman Empire, Metz became one of Gaul’s principal towns, with a population of 40,000, before being taken over by the Franks at the end of the 5th century. Merovingian kings of Austrasia resided in the city between the 6th and 8th centuries. Metz was integrated into the Holy Roman Empire and granted semi-independence after the Treaty of Verdun in 843. Metz became a republic in the 12th century and lasted until the 15th century.
After the Treaty of Chambord was signed in 1552, Metz passed into the hands of the Kings of France. As the German Protestant Princes who traded Metz (alongside Toul and Verdun) for the promise of French military assistance did not have the authority to cede the territory of the Holy Roman Empire, the change of jurisdiction was not recognized until the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. Metz became a strategically fortified town under French rule when it became the capital of the Three Bishoprics. As a result of the Estates-General’s creation of the departments in 1789, Metz became the capital of the Moselle Department.
According to the Treaty of Frankfurt of 1871, the city became part of the German Empire after the Franco-Prussian War. It became the capital of the Bezirk Lothringen after being part of the Imperial Territory of Alsace-Lorraine.
Metz remained German until the end of the First World War when it became French. Nazi Germany annexed the city during the Second World War after the Battle of France. The attack on Metz by the United States Army in World War II resulted in Metz returning to French sovereignty again.
Metz was chosen as the capital of the newly created Lorraine region in the 1950s. It has become the heart of the Greater Region and the SaarLorLux Euroregion since the creation of the European Community and the European Union.
Geography
Metz lies on the banks of the Moselle and the Seille rivers, 43 km (27 mi) from the Schengen tripoint between France, Germany, and Luxembourg. Several branches of the Moselle river create several islands within the city’s urban planning, which makes several islands.
Climate
The oceanic environment characterizes Lorraine. During the summer, temperatures average 25 degrees Celsius (77.0 degrees Fahrenheit), making July the warmest month of the year. The winters are cold and snowy, with an average low temperature of −0.5 °C (31.1 °F) in January. From November to February, low temperatures can reach much lower levels, and snow can fall throughout the night and early morning.

Approximately 73,000 people work within the city’s urban agglomeration, which is Lorraine’s economic center. As a result of the city’s transport facilities, including its international high-speed railway, motorway, inland connections, and bus rapid transit system, it has become a transport hub in the heart of the European Union. Suckling pig, quiche, potée, and Lorrain pâté are some of the local specialties. Many recipes use Mirabelle and Damson plums, such as jam, tarts, charcuterie, and fruit brandies. Metz is home to the Football Club of Metz (FC Metz), a French football association club in Ligue 1 (as of the 2019–2020 season).
