Michalovce and the surrounding lowlands were settled in the Palaeolithic period. Near the foot of the Vihorlat mountains, archaeologists have discovered prehistoric Homo sapiens skeletons and numerous Neolithic objects. A major cultural and trading center within the Carpathian Basin during the Late Bronze Age, when bronze was the central metal, was the surrounding area. It and the southern Tisa River Basin played a vital role in establishing relationships with regions outside the Carpathians. Michalovce’s history was profoundly influenced by Celtic tribes, starting with the Gallic expansion in the 4th century B.C. and later by the Romans.

According to Slovak historians, the Avars were the first empire in the area to contain Slavs. Slovak historians claimed that the site was part of the Great Moravian empire in the ninth century. Most likely, it is not the case. Legend states that the legendary Prince Laborec was buried and died in Michalovce. Hungary ruled the region from the tenth century onwards. It was sparsely populated, and there were few settlements when the Magyar tribes arrived in the late 800s. Historically, there has been a lot of speculation, legends, and nationalism in Slovak history.

Hungary was divided after the Ottoman conquest in the sixteenth century, and Michalovce became part of the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom and then Royal Hungary. As the nineteenth and eighteenth centuries progressed, the town grew considerably. As a result of the Austrian-Hungarian Ausgleich of 1867, it became a large community and shortly after became a district of Zemplén County.
