Miskolc Overview

Miskolc is a city in northeastern Hungary. It is the 4th largest city in the country, and also the county capital of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén and the regional center of Northern Hungary.

Etymology

Though the name can be a little confusing – it is derived from Miško, the Slavic form of Michael – it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are from Miskolc. The name is associated with the clan named after the same set of people who live in Miskolc. The earliest evidence of a written form of the name is in 1230, with the last reference being 1245.

Geography

Budapest is located in Hungary, at the meeting point of different geographical regions. The city’s total area is 236 km2 (91 sq mi). The ground level is sloped gradually; the difference between the highest and lowest area is about 800 meters or 2,600 feet.

The lowest areas of the river Sajó are found near the banks. The altitude of these areas is around 110–120 meters (360–390 ft) and they belong to the Great Plain Region. The rocks that make up this region are sedimentary. Bükk Hill can be found between Avas and Diósgyőr, which are located on the plates of sandstone, marl clay, coal layers, and volcanic rocks.

Central Bükk is a gently sloping mountainous area with a high altitude of between 400 and 600 meters. It is made up of various rocks, mainly limestone, slate, dolomite, and other fossils from the Triassic period.

Population

157,639 (2016)

Climate

Summers in Miskolc might be hot, but they can also be humid. During the summer months, daytime temperatures outside will typically range from 20-30 degrees Celsius (68-86 Fahrenheit). Miskolc is located in the North-Eastern part of Hungary. It receives about 120 centimeters of snowfall each year, intense cold up to −20 °C (−4 °F), and days below freezing during winter.

History

The area has been inhabited for thousands of years, with archaeological findings dating back to the Paleolithic period. It is even theorized that one of our earliest ancestors lived here during this time – the Ragusi people. The Hungarian conquest began during the late 9th century. It was known by this name for the first time in 1210 when the King of Hungary deprived oligarchic power.

Miskolc has been a market town since the middle of the 13th century. King Louis I of Hungary granted it that status in 1365 and transformed its castle into a Gothic fortress. Miskolc developed dynamically and quickly during the Ottoman occupation, but it was only then that further architectural changes were finally decided. That’s when the city became known for its rich and beautiful architecture. This was also ruled by the Ottomans after their victorious battle in 1596 and was a part of the Eyalet of Egir for many years. It was during these years that Miskolc became an important center for wine-making. It was the 17th century. Kastav was large and a dozen guilds had been established.

In the 18th century, Prince Francis II Rákóczi, leader of the Hungarians led their fight for independence. The imperial forces raided and burned Miskolc in 1707. Four years later, half of it had been rebuilt again and fully functioning! Thanks to the success of Miskolc, the city began to thrive again and show signs of being prosperous. In 1724, it was chosen to be the city where Borsod county’s county hall was built. Other buildings that were built in the 18th, and 19th centuries include a new city hall, Lévay József Református Gimnázium and Diákotthon schools, churches, a synagogue, and a theater. The first stone-built theatre in the world was built in Hungary in the early 18th century by Andrássy Gyula. According to the census of 1786, Kolozsvár had 50,000 inhabitants.

Economy

Miskolc has a long history of being dominated by industry and has received a lot of economic benefits from that. Industrialization during the Socialist era (in particular metallurgy) bolstered the city’s economy and boosted it to new highs.

The development of Miskolc started after the Ottoman occupation. Trade routes played a crucial role in its economic prosperity during the Middle Ages. The Hedtke site was already busy in the 18th century – it seems like they had a lot going on! They have a long history, and they started to attract attention in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The first iron furnace was built by Henrik Fazola around 1770. It did not survive, but in 1813 a new furnace constructed from this era was unveiled and it is still alive today. Several new settlements were formed in the Bükk Mountains to provide dwellings for the workers at the glass plants. Some of them are now part of Miskolc, including Alsóhámor, Felsőhámor, Ómassa, and Bükkszentlászló.

Sports

Football is the most popular sport in Miskolc. The leading club in the city is DVTK.

Miskolc’s professional women’s basketball team, DKSK Miskolc MISI, has won the National Cup twice.

The Dukla Banská Bystrica Ice Hockey Team plays in the Tipsport Liga

The women’s volleyball team of MVSC is among the highest-level players in Hungary.

Miskolc has some of the best public transport around, with a well-developed mass transit system that includes trams and buses. It also boasts one of the first tramways in Hungary and one of the first bus networks in Hungary. While this was a long time ago, Miskolc is still regarded as a modern city today thanks to its world-famous public.
