The commune of Montauban is located in the Tarn-et-Garonne department, in the region of Occitania, in the South of France. The city lies 50 kilometers north of Toulouse and is the department’s capital.
Montauban is southern France’s second oldest bastide (after Mont-de-Marsan). A liberal charter was granted to it by Count Alphonse Jourdain of Toulouse in 1144. Most of the residents came from Montauriol, a village surrounded by St Théodard’s monastery.
The town suffered greatly during the Albigensian wars and the Inquisition of the 13th century. Still, by 1317 it had recovered sufficiently from being chosen by John XXII as the capital of a diocese whose cathedral was the basilica of St Théodard.
It was ceded to the English in 1360 under the Treaty of Brétigny; the inhabitants expelled the English in 1414. Bishops and magistrates embraced Protestantism in 1560, dismissed the monks, and demolished the cathedral. Ten years later, a small independent republic was formed under the Peace of Saint-Germain in this small Huguenot stronghold. In 1621, it was the headquarters of the Huguenot rebellion, and Louis XIII successfully besieged it for 86 days.
As a Protestant town, Montauban resisted and refused to bow to the Catholic King, refusing to give allegiance to the royal power. Four hundred cannonballs were fired to scare off the King’s opponents and speed up the siege, but Montauban resisted, and the royal army was defeated. In September, the city celebrates “les 400 coups” (the 400 shots), a typical French phrase. The cannonballs are still visible at Saint Jacques church.
After the fall of La Rochelle in 1629, when Cardinal Richelieu destroyed Montauban’s fortifications, Montauban submitted to royal authority. Later in the century, Protestants suffered more persecution as Louis XIV sent troops to their homes to persecute them (dragonnades). Then in 1685, he revoked the Edict of Nantes, which had granted them tolerance.
A secret vault behind a Montauban wine cellar briefly housed Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa during World War II.

Montauban’s climate is temperate and subtropical (borderline Csa/Csb according to the Köppen classification). In winter, temperatures are mild, while in summer, they are hot. In 2003, 2006, 2012, and 2015, the town experienced severe droughts. A wave of violent storms struck the Tarn-et-Garonne region on 31 August 2015.
More than its industries, which include nursery gardening, cloth-weaving, cloth-dressing, flour-milling, wood-sawing, furniture, silk-gauze, straw hats, and the manufacture of farm produce, horses, game, and poultry, Montauban’s commercial importance is primarily due to its trade in agricultural products, horses, game, and poultry.
Despite this, more and more mechanical products are being manufactured there due to the proximity of Toulouse and the lower cost of industrial grounds.
As of 2017, Montauban is the center of an urban area with 79,300 people.

Rugby is very popular in the city, but the athletic club is also very efficient, and national results have been regular since 2007. There are some international athletes in Montauban’s athletic club. Since 2004, the city has organized the Rene Arcuset cross-country race yearly.

Unlike other tourist attractions in Montauban, its cathedral is a minor draw. Because its facade is made of white stone instead of red brick, the monument stands at the city’s highest point.
The Montauban aquatic center, opened in 2013, is the third-largest aquatic complex in France and is open to locals and tourists. There are six indoor and outdoor pools, a hammam, saunas, a state-of-the-art gym, and a balcony where you can relax.
