Montlucon Overview
The commune of Montluçon is located on the Cher river in central France. Allier’s prefecture is located in the smaller town of Moulins. However, it is the largest commune in the department. People from Montluçonnais are known as Montluçonnais.
Geography
Montluçon lies near the border between Centre-Val de Loire and Nouvelle-Aquitaine, northwest of the Allier department.
Through four main road axes, plus the highway A71 from Orléans to Clermont-Ferrand; and a railway linking the North Vierzon and Paris (3-5h), Montluçon is connected to nearby regions and towns. Montluçon was previously connected to the north by the Berry channel.
History
Montluçon is thought to have been built in the Middle Ages, and Monte Lucii (Mont de Lucius) is mentioned for the first time in the eleventh century. On a bend in the river Cher, Guillaume, son of Archambaud IV of Bourbon, built the castle in a defensible position.
In 1171, the English took the town, which was part of the duchy of Bourbon; Philip Augustus took it in 1181; and in the 14th century, the English were finally driven out.
Louis II de Bourbon reconstructed the castle and walls in the 14th century. The French crown acquired Montluçon and other Bourbon lands in 1529, and Henry IV strengthened the defenses.
As a result of coalpits 12 km (7 mi) away in Commentary, the Canal de Berry in 1830, and the railway in 1864, Montluçon became the administrative center of the area in 1791. As a result of these transport links, ore, coal, wood, and manufactured goods could be imported and exported. From 5000 people in 1830 to 50 000 in 1950, the population grew by five times.
Despite Montluçon being in a free zone, the Germans occupied the Dunlop tyre factory during World War II to exploit the research laboratory to synthesize rubber since natural rubber could not be imported. Germany was also interested in producing tyres for Luftwaffe aircraft.
As a result, the Allies bombed the site and part of Saint-Victor between 12 and 16 September 1943, killing 36 and injuring more than 250 civilians.
In 1943, a mob of citizens overran guards supervising a mass deportation of men to Germany in a notable act of resistance in the city. During World War II, the Service de Travail Obligatoire (Obligatory Work Service) program placed able Frenchmen in German factories to fill vacancies. Despite the forced industrial service awaiting them in the Reich, all the deported men escaped into the countryside.

This church’s understated facade dates back to the 1700s and does not prepare you for the history within. Little passageways connecting the nave with each transept on either side of the center in the Romanesque interior, dating from the 1100s.

This church, another of Montluçon’s historical monuments, combines Gothic and Romanesque architecture from the 15th and 12th centuries. Louis II de Bourbon ordered the last redesign and expanded the castle on top of the hill.
Musée Canal de Berry
The Canal de Berry connected the Loire and the Cher from 1840 to 1955 and provided a branch for Montluçon. It consisted of 260 kilometers of waterways and locks. This museum opens up a forgotten chapter of the region’s history in old lime kilns north of the town.
Néris-les-Bains
Néris-les-Bains is a spa town in the early foothills of the Massif Central, just minutes away from Montluçon. Romans developed two palatial baths here using the thermal springs discovered in Gaul.
Vallon-en-Sully
If you want to experience the Canal du Berry firsthand, the picturesque village of Vallon-en-Sully is the place to go. The canal is once again navigable here along a length of its length.
