A coalition of Germans led by Ariovistus fought against the Roman army of Julius Caesar west of Mulhouse in 58 B.C. In the late twelfth century, the town began to accumulate written records. As part of the Holy Roman Empire, it was part of the southern Alsatian county of Sundgau. Mulhouse was a member of the Décapole, an association of ten Free Imperial Cities in Alsace, between 1354 and 1515. Due to its association with the Swiss Confederation in 1515, France did not annex the city in 1648 like the rest of the Sundgau. An enclave in Alsace, this was a free and independent Calvinist republic, known as Stadtrepublik Mülhausen, associated with the Swiss Confederation until, following a vote by its citizens on 4 January 1798, it became a part of France when the Treaty of Mulhouse was signed on 28 January 1798, during the Directory period of the French Revolution.
Mulhouse became one of France’s leading textile centers in the nineteenth century thanks to the Koechlin family’s pioneering cotton cloth manufacturing. André Koechlin (1789–1875) built machinery and began making railroad equipment in 1842. The company employed approximately 1,800 people in 1839. Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques became one of the six sizeable French locomotive constructors in 1872 after merging with Elsässische Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft Grafenstaden.
The textile and tanning industries stimulated the town’s development, followed by the chemical and engineering industries in the mid-18th century. For a long time, Mulhouse was known as the French Manchester. Therefore, the town is closely linked to Louisiana, from which it imports cotton and the Levant. Its small center can also be attributed to the town’s history.
Mulhouse is bordered by two rivers, the Doller and Ill, both tributaries of the Rhine. Mulhouse is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Strasbourg and Zürich, 350 kilometers (217 miles) from Milan, and about 340 kilometers (211 miles) from Frankfurt. In addition to Basel, Switzerland, and Freiburg, Germany, it shares the EuroAirPort international airport with these cities.
Mulhouse has a temperate oceanic climate (Köppen: Cfb), but its location further from the Atlantic Ocean results in colder winters and hotter summers than the rest of France.

Mulhouse is famous for its museums, especially the Cité de l’Automobile (also known as the Musée national de l’automobile, ‘National Museum of the Automobile’) and the Cité du Train (also known as the Musée Français du Chemin de Fer, ‘French Museum of the Railway’), which is the largest automobile and railway museum in the world respectively…

The former city hall of Mulhouse dates back to 1552 and is built in a Renaissance style typical of the Rhone region. Trompe l’oeil paintings cover all but one side of the exterior, depicting allegorical images of justice, courage, temperance, faith, and charity.
