Many monuments date back to Nancy’s former days as the capital of the Duchy of Lorraine in Nancy, a riverfront city in the northeastern French region of Grand Est. Place Stanislas, an 18th-century landmark, dominates the city. In the city’s medieval old town, this square is surrounded by gilded wrought-iron gates and ornate fountains.
Human settlement in the area dates back to 800 BC. Early settlers were likely drawn to the region by easy access to iron ore and a ford on the Meurthe. It is first recorded as Nanciaco, possibly derived from a Gaulish personal name. Around 1050, Gérard, Duke of Lorraine, built a small fortified town called Nanciacum (Nancy).
During the War of Succession of Champagne, Nancy was burned in 1218 and conquered by Frederick II. During the next few centuries, Nancy became the capital of the Duchy of Lorraine, rebuilt in stone. As a result of the Battle of Nancy in 1477, Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy was defeated and killed; he was succeeded by René II, Duke of Lorraine.
The pragmatic Sanction of 1713 left the throne to Charles VI’s next child after Joseph I and Charles VI failed to produce heirs. This was a daughter, Maria Theresa of Austria. Her marriage to Duke François of Lorraine, who reluctantly agreed to exchange his ancestral lands for the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, was arranged by Emperor Charles in 1736.
Exiled Polish king Stanislaus I (Stanislaw Leszczynski in Polish), the father-in-law of French king Louis XV, received Lorraine. As a result of his nominal rule, Nancy had a flourishing baroque culture and architecture during the Baroque period. During Stanislaus’ reign, the city’s old medieval quarter was connected with the newer part by Place Stanislaus. In February 1766, when Stanislaus died, Lorraine and Barrois became a stable government of the Kingdom of France. In 1776, the Lorraine and Barrois Parlement was established in Nancy.
Nancy lies on the left bank of the river Meurthe, about ten kilometers upstream from its confluence with the Moselle. Several canals run through the city, including the Marne-Rhine Canal and the Meurthe Canal. The city center of Nancy is situated at 200 meters above mean sea level, while the surrounding hills are about 150 meters higher. The area of Nancy proper is relatively small: 15 square kilometers, and there are no boundaries between its built-up area and its neighboring suburbs. Jarville-la-Malgrange, Laxou, Malzéville, Maxéville, Saint-Max, Tomblaine, Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy, and Villers-lès-Nancy border Nancy.

Nancy has a warm oceanic climate (Köppen: Cfb), although it’s a bit more extreme than many larger French cities. Per French standards, it is a “continental” climate with a slight maritime influence (unrelated to the Köppen classification, as West winds dominate the country).
Place Stanislas, reopened by Jacques Chirac after renovation, is one of the city’s World Heritage buildings.
Nancy-Ville’s central railway station, Gare de Nancy-Ville, is connected to Paris (high-speed rail line), Metz, Lyon, Strasbourg, and several regional cities.
In Nancy, public transport is provided by Service de Transport de l’Agglomération Nancéienne (STAN), operated by Veolia Transport, using the Tram by STAN as well as around 20 conventional bus routes.
Since 1982, Nancy has also been served by trolleybuses, but in 2000, the three-route trolleybus system was reconfigured into a single, longer route with a surface guidance system (GLT, or TVR in French).
Since 1983, Nancy has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its wealth of eighteenth-century architecture in Stanislas, de la Carrière, and Alliance.
Nancy is the ideal weekend getaway destination in France if you are looking for a city! As much as its taste buds, Nancy will seduce you with its breathtaking art nouveau heritage, Stanislas square, and many restaurants.
One of the most striking squares in Europe is in Nancy’s Ville Neuve. The Place Stanislas was built between 1752 and 1760, mainly by Emmanuel Héré under the name Place Royale.
The former Palace of the Ducs of Lorraine (Ducal Palace) in Ville Vieille dates back to the 15th century (late Gothic to early Renaissance period).
Located on Place Stanislas, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy exhibits European paintings from the 14th through the 21st centuries. French church property was confiscated during the French Revolution in 1793, which led to the museum’s creation. The museum’s early collection consisted of artworks seized from French churches.
The Musée de l’Ecole de Nancy is a unique museum housed in the Villa Majorelle, a beautiful house built in the early 1900s for the artist Louis Majorelle. In Nancy, the Villa Majorelle was the first example of an Art Nouveau house listed as a Historic Monument.
Nancy’s Old Town (Ville Vieille) is roughly bordered by Rue Saint-Dizier, Rue Saint-Georges, and Rue Saint-Jean, the town’s three main traffic arteries.
The 15th-century Eglise des Cordeliers is located just beyond the Ducal Palace in the Ville Vieille. It is named after the Franciscan Order, which required monks to wear cords around their waists.
Like the Place Stanislas, the Place de la Carrière and Place d’Alliance have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nancy is known for its elegance and refinement, reflected in these public squares.
A Gothic Revival church built in the 19th century, the Basilique Saint-Epvre is one of the most exciting sites in the Ville Vieille.
Located on the site of the historic Dukes’ gardens, Pépinière Park bears strong ties to the city’s history. Nancy’s UNESCO-listed squares, Place Stanislas and Place de la Carrière, are just a few steps away from the park.
This small church is richly decorated like a jewel box. Catharina Opalinska’s mausoleum and Stanislas Leszczynàski’s tomb can be found in the lavish Baroque interior.
