Nanterre Overview
In the La Défense business district, Nanterre is known for its high-rise office buildings. As well as the famous 1930s frescoes in the Cathédrale Sainte-Geneviève, Tours Aillaud has landmark 1970s residential towers with cloudlike murals. Name
Before the Roman conquest of Gaul, Nanterre was called Nanterre, and Nemetodorum was the name recorded by the Romans. The word name means “shrine” or “sacred place” in Celtic, and Duron means “hard, tough, enduring” in Celtic. A famous shrine that existed in ancient times is believed to have been the sacred place referred to.
It is the inhabitants of Nanterre who are called “Nanterriens” or “Nanterrois(es).”
History
Tradition places the sacred shrine of antiquity in Mont-Valérien, as referred to etymologically. Archeological discoveries made between 1994 and 2005 discovered a Gallic cemetery dated to the third century B.C., calling into question both the exact location of the pre-Roman capital of the Parisii and the original site of Lutetia, the Roman era Paris. Near the bank of the Seine, northwest of Nanterre, is a large cemetery that may be referred to etymologically as a sacred place, along with working people’s homes from later in the ancient era. Julius Caesar mentioned Lutetia in 50 BCE, reporting an assembly of Roman Legion commanders and local Gallic leaders in Lutetia in 53 B.C. Nanterre’s river follows two channels around an island, although this had been thought to be Île de la Cité from Caesar’s mention of an island. As a result of their alliance with Vercingetorix, the Parisii were defeated by Titus Labienus, one of Caesar’s legates, in 52 B.C. Before the Roman forces arrived, the Parisii destroyed the bridges and set fire to Lutetia, according to Caesar’s Commentarii. Archeological digs in Nanterre have revealed over 15 hectares of construction from the pre-Roman or Roman eras. Nanterre may have been the closest pre-Roman settlement to the city’s modern center based on these archeological findings.
Paris’ patron saint, Sainte Genevieve, was born in Nanterre in 419 or 422 AD.
In what the French press called the Nanterre massacre, nine town councilors were shot and killed by disgruntled local activist Richard Durn on March 27, 2002. Two policemen questioned the murderer at Nanterre City Hall about the reason for his killing on March 28. The murderer jumped from the 4th floor and killed himself.

There are three stations on RER line A serving Nanterre: Nanterre-Préfecture, Nanterre-Université, and Nanterre-Ville.
On the Transilien Paris-Saint-Lazare suburban rail line, Nanterre-Université station is also an interchange station.
