Narbonne Overview

A town on the Canal de la Robine, Narbonne is located in southern France. A Gothic cathedral was begun in the 13th century but never completed. Archeology and art museums are housed in the grand Palais des Archevêques (Archbishop’s Palace). Old warehouses from the town’s days as a Roman port make up the Horreum, an underground labyrinth. Narbonne Plage has a beach and harbor nearby.

Geography

Narbonne is connected to the Canal du Midi and the River Aude by the Canal de la Robine, which runs through its center. Across the border to Spain, Montpellier and Nîmes are very close to the A9 motorway, which connects them to Perpignan and Barcelona. A recently renovated train station connects the TGV to Spain, Paris, Calais, and the Eurostar to London. In addition to Narbonne Plage (beach), the nearest open water, La Nautique, is only 2 km away, although there is no sand, but rather pebbles.

Etymology

Historical sources suggest Narbo’s original name refers to an Iron Age hillfort near the town’s current location or its occupants from the Iron Age. According to the Greek historian Hecataeus of Miletus, in the fifth century B.C., the area was a Celtic harbor and marketplace at that time, and its inhabitants were called Ναρβαῖοι. Ancient inscriptions sometimes translated the name to Latin as Nedhena and sometimes into Iberian as Nedhena.

History

In 118 BC, the Roman Republic established Narbonne in Gaul, Colonia Narbo Martius, colloquially Narbo, as the capital of the newly created Gallia Transalpina province. At the time of the colony’s foundation, the Via Domitia was built, connecting Italy and Spain and serving as the first Roman road in Gaul. Due to its geographical location, Narbonne was located at a significant crossroads since the Via Domitia connected to the Via Aquitania, which led toward the Atlantic through Tolosa and Burdigala. A river called Aude crossed it as well. A portion of the land, now known as Narbonne, was given to the surviving members of Caesar’s Legio X Equesttris.

As a competitor to Massilia (Marseille), Narbonne gained political importance. The 10th Legion was settled there by Julius Caesar, and its port was developed as Marseille supported Pompey. Rome was renowned for its rosemary-flower honey, one of the products of Narbonne.

Gallia Narbonensis became the capital of Gallia Transalpina after its province was renamed Gallia Transalpina. With a powerful administration, the city expanded economically and architecturally. Approximately 30,000 to 50,000 people lived in the town then, and as many as 100,000 may have lived there.

Hydatius describes a local military leader handing over the city in exchange for support to Visigoths in 462 as the end of Roman rule. In the aftermath of the Battle of Vouille (507), it became the capital of the Visigothic province of Septimania. Childrenebert I, the Frankish king, invaded Septimania in 531, defeated Amalaric, the Visigothic king, and occupied Narbonne. Theudis, Amalaric’s successor, reclaimed the rich province of Septimania, including Narbonne, after Childebert’s continued invasion failed. The last two Visigoth kings, Agila II, and Ardo, retreated to Narbonne after losing Toledo and Barcelona in 711/712.

Sport

The rugby union team R.C. Narbonne was founded in 1907 in Narbonne. Their home stadium is the Parc des Sports Et de l’Amitié (capacity 12,000). The colors they wear are orange and black.

Transport

Direct connections are available to Paris, Barcelona, Toulouse, Marseille, and many regional destinations from the Gare de Narbonne. Citibus.fr operates a comprehensive public transport system throughout Narbonne and its surrounding communities. There is no airport in Narbonne, so travelers arriving by plane arrive at nearby airports such as Béziers, Carcassonne, Perpignan, Toulouse, or Montpellier.

Population
