Fontfroide Abbey

Founded in 1093 on land granted to Benedictine monks by the Viscount of Narbonne, the abbey’s history began in 1145 when it was attached to the Cistercian order.

Archbishop’s Palace

Outside this monument in the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville is an exposed fragment of the Roman road Via Domitia, which connected Cadiz in Spain with Rome across the south of modern-day France.

Gilles Aycelin Donjon

The four-story keep that dominates the west side of the palace complex was built by archbishop Gilles Aycelin at the turn of the 14th century. Despite being a minor attraction, seeing if you have a Narbonne museum multipass is worth seeing.

Narbonne Cathedral

This high gothic cathedral from the 14th century is unfinished, which adds to its charm: Its transept (the cathedral’s “arms”) was never added because it would have required removing stones from the city’s defenses.

Musée Lapidaire

One of Europe’s largest lapidaries is housed in the former Priory of Notre-Dame de Lamourguier, built in the 13th century. All in all, there are 1,300 stones in the city, and everyone reveals something about its past.

Gruissan Plage

The Gruissan Plage is a generous expanse of sand bordered by a holiday community without towers or excessive development. During the summer, lifeguards patrol the beach, and a few places serve lunch or snacks.
