Narva Overview

Narva is a city in Estonia, as well as the country’s third largest. It’s located at the eastern point of Estonia and it’s close to Russia. This town is surrounded by lakes including Lake Peipus and is situated on a river that empties into this lake.

Early settlement

People settled in the area from the 5th to the 4th millennium BC. The fortified settlement at Narva Joaoru is the oldest known in Estonia, dating to around 1000 BC. Narva is first mentioned in Russia’s First Novgorod Chronicle in 1172, but historians believe that it has been inhabited since the 8th century. Historical evidence is hard to come by since many trade routes existed during the early 1200s. Experts believe that the name may have originated from Narva, a trading complex by the same name. This assertion is reinforced by the mention of a frequently used route during this period and no evidence of any settlement at the time.

Demographics

Narva’s population decreased in 2013. It reached 59,888 that year, down from 60,454 the year before. The population once was 83,000 in 1992 and has traditionally been 95%, Russian-speaking citizens. If you’re from Estonia, chances are you were born and raised here. If you’re not, you likely immigrated to their country and their ancestors who founded this place chose the name of this region for a reason. The Soviet authorities from 1946 to 1954 prohibited the return of Narva’s pre-war residents in the aftermath of World War II. Reconstruction for approx. 10 years was tough, but the city has largely recovered since then. Estonian-majority Tallinn was among the few thriving cities in the Soviet Union during World War II. However, ethnic Russians had formed a significant minority: 29.7% of the city’s population were Russian in the census of 1934.

46.7% of the city’s inhabitants are Estonian citizens, 36.3% are citizens of the Russian Federation, and 15.3% of the population have undefined citizenship. Because of this new situation since 2022, there has been an upsurge in take-up in Estonian citizenships by Ukrainians trying to leave Russia and enter Estonia overland and by sea.

Narva is in Estonia, a country with one of the lowest rates of HIV/AIDS. In 2012, 1.2% of people in the country were newly infected with the disease. Between 2001 and 2008, more than 1,600 cases of HIV were registered in Narva, one of the worst areas in Estonia. In 2014, the rate has declined with 59 new cases reported.

Geography

Narva lies in eastern Estonia and is around halfway between Tallin and St. Petersburg. It’s the capital of Ida-Viru County, and Jõhvi is located 50 km away to the west. The eastern border of the city coincides with the Estonian-Russian border. Russia and Estonia share a portion of land, along with a lake and the Narva Reservoir. The Estonia section lies mostly on the other side of town, and about 20 minutes or so from downtown Narva by car. The mouth of the Narva River is about 13 km (8 mi) from the city in Russia and joins the Gulf of Finland.

Narva is a city in Estonia. It’s the capital of Harjumaa, with 62 km² of total land. Its population is about 36,100 people. The city transferred from the rural area to Narva city in 1938. Kudruküla is the largest of Narva’s dacha regions, located 6 km (4 mi) northwest of the main city. It’s close to Jõesuu for those who are visiting.

Climate

Narva has a warm-summer humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb) with mild to warm, rainy summers. Enjoy Narva’s diverse climate that transitions from mild in the summer to cold in the winter!

Landmarks

Narva is dominated by the 15th-century castle, with the 51-meter-tall (167 ft) Pikk Hermann tower as its most prominent landmark. The sprawling complex of the Kreenholm Manufacture, located in the proximity of scenic waterfalls, is one of the largest industrial complexes in Europe. Other historic buildings in the city include Swedish mansions from the 16th century, a Brandy wine warehouse from the 17th century, and remains of the fortress of Erik Dahlberg.

Across the Narva River lies the Russian Ivangorod fortress, founded by Grand Prince Ivan III of Muscovy in 1492 and known in Western sources as Neo-Ivangorod. Narva and Ivangorod once had a complicated history. While Narva was administrated as part of Estonia, Ivangorod (Estonian: Jaanilinn) was administered as part of Russia briefly before World War II.

FC Narva Trans is a football club from Estonia founded in 1993 based on Narva Kreenholmi Stadium. They’ve been playing at a professional level since 1995.

Transportation

Narva has a railway station, which is located on the international railway line between Estonia and Russia. The two countries are linked through a daily international passenger rail service – an overnight train that links Moscow to Tallinn and stops in Narva. On average, it takes around 3 hours for train tickets to be purchased, then gets sent via courier to the passenger’s home. The process used to take 4 days and now has been significantly improved. Many international travelers to Estonia can find convenient transportation from the central rail station. If you are traveling to another country, there are many bus stations near the airport that serve flights from other domestic locations as well. There is also an airport near Narva with a general aviation grass airstrip.

Sport

Two of the most well-known professional sports in the city are hockey and football.

Narva plays at the Narva Ice Hall which hosted the 2005 World Juniors. JK Narva Trans play at the Narva Kreenholm Stadium. They founded the Meistriliiga and have never been relegated from the Estonian top division. They’ve won 2 Estonian Cups and 2 Estonian Supercups.
