Neuilly-sur-Seine Overview
A commune in the department of Hauts-de-Seine in France, Neuilly-sur-Seine is just west of Paris. Near the city are mainly residential neighborhoods and many corporate headquarters and embassies.
History
Pont de Neuilly was originally a small hamlet under the jurisdiction of Villiers, which was mentioned in medieval sources as early as 832 and is now incorporated into the commune of Levallois-Perret. A charter of the Abbey of Saint-Denis says Neuilly for the first time in 1222 as Portus de Lulliaco, which means “Port of Lulliacum” in Medieval Latin. An earlier charter recorded Lugniacum as the name of the town in 1224. The name was also registered as Luingni in a sales contract dated 1266.
According to a ruling issued by the parliament of Paris in 1316, the name was recorded as Nully, which was different from previous records. During Medieval times, Nully was called Nulliacum (the Latin version of Nully). It wasn’t until 1648 that the name Nully was finally set, as it alternated between Luny and Nully in the following centuries. It is spelled Neuilly after the French Academy pronunciation standard of the ill as a y (see IPA at the top).
Various etymologies and explanations have explained these discrepancies in Neuilly’s names over the centuries. Nulliacum or Lugniacum may have been the original name of Neuilly, and it was only later corrupted into Nulliacum or Nully. According to some, Lulliacum or Lugniacum means “estate of Lulius (or Lunius), probably a Gallo-Roman landowner. Several French placenames are derived from Gallo-Roman landowner names and suffixed with the traditional placename suffix “-acum.” The name Neuilly, however, may not be the result of a Gallo-Roman patronym, according to some researchers, because Neuilly was probably not a settlement during the Roman occupation of Gaul and was located within the large Forest of Rouvray, of which only the Bois de Boulogne remains today.
