Nevers Overview

In the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of central France, Nevers is the prefecture of the Nièvre department. In the former province of Nivernais, it served as the capital city. Two hundred sixty kilometers separate it from Paris in the south-southeast.

History

Noviodunum, a town held by the Aedui during Roman contact, is the first mention of Nevers in written history. Noviodunum was an important Roman site, and Julius Caesar made it a depot in 52 BCE when he described it as a convenient location on the banks of the Loire (B. G. vii. 55). Among the things he had there were his hostages, corn, and military chest, which had the money he had brought from home for the war, as well as his own and the army’s baggage and several horses he had bought in Spain and Italy.

Following his failure in Gergovia, the Aedui massacred the people at Noviodunum, looking after stores, negotiators, and travelers. In boats, they carried off all the corn they could, burned the rest, or threw it into the river. They divided the money and the horses among themselves.

They burned the town because they believed they couldn’t hold it. As a result, Caesar lost great stores, and it may seem imprudent to leave them in the hands of treacherous allies. The only thing he could have done differently was to do what he did since he was in dire straits that year.

In xl. 38, Dio Cassius tells Caesar’s story based on the affair of Noviodunum. As a result, he shows that either he does not understand his original or knows what he is writing about since he states incorrectly what Caesar did on occasion.

In the Antonine Itinerary, the city is called Nevirnum, and it is corrupted into Ebrinum in the Tabula Peutingeriana. Another source refers to the city as Nivernum or Nebirnum.

After the end of the 5th century, it became the seat of a bishopric. At least the beginning of the 10th century marks the beginning of the country’s existence. It was in 1194 and 1231 that the citizens of Nevers received charters. There was a university in the town briefly in the 14th century when it was transferred to Orléans.

Gonzaga family occupied the town in 1565, and in 1627 they succeeded to the Duchy of Mantua. 1708 marked the end of this line of Gonzaga Dukes of Nevers.

Geography

Nevers is located on the right bank of the Loire river, on the slope of a hill.

Economy

Nevers is the seat of a bishopric, a court of first instance, a court of commerce, a court of assistance, a chamber of business, and a branch of the French Central Bank. In addition to several lycées, it boasts a training college for female teachers, ecclesiastical seminaries, and an art school affiliated with the Institut supérieur de l’automobile et des transports. The town has distilleries, tanneries, dye works, porcelain, agricultural implements, chemical manures, glue, boilers and iron goods, boots and shoes, and fur garments. To manufacture faience, the area has several industries, such as iron and steel, wood, wine, grain, livestock, hydraulic lime, kaolin, and clay.

Transport

Nevers has connections to Paris, Dijon, Lyon, Clermont-Ferrand, and other regional cities. There is a motorway connecting Nevers with Paris called the A77.

Population

34,228 (2015)

Climate

Nevers has a pleasant summer climate with some clouds and a chilly winter climate with much wind and cloud cover. It is rarely below 21°F or above 89°F, as the temperature typically ranges from 31°F to 78°F throughout the year. Visiting Nevers from mid-June to early September would be best to enjoy warm-weather activities.

Culture

Nevers has been known for its faience for centuries.

There is also the museum Conservatoire de la monoplace française near the Formula One circuit of Magny-Cours.

A French woman from, Nevers, the main character in the film Hiroshima mon amour (played by Emmanuelle Riva), is from Nevers, and the film includes many flashbacks to her childhood there. She is told by her Japanese lover at the end of the film, “You are Nevers.” The dialogue throughout the film plays on the English translation of the town’s name, such as “Nevers? Never!”.

Except for the end scenes, most of Rosalie Blum was filmed in Nevers between March and April 2015.

Best Things to Do in Nevers (France)

Nevers Cathedral

Cathedral fans will notice something unusual about this superb medieval structure: It has two apses, one at the west end where the nave’s portal would generally be, and the other at the east end.

Palais Ducal

The Ducal Palace stands on a high ground where Nevers’ political and religious institutions are housed, representing the power of the old Counts and Dukes of Nevers. The architecture blends Renaissance and Victorian styles from the 16th and 17th centuries with dormer windows, decorative chimneys, and a central spiral staircase.

Musée de la Faïence

An abbey museum in which hundreds of pieces of local faience can be found will delight any person with an eye for acceptable decorative items. Visiting Nevers Manufactories will allow you to appreciate the technical expertise on display.

Faience Workshops

Italian potters settled here at the Duke of Nevers’ invitation at the end of the 1500s, boosting the Nevers’ faience industry.

Porte du Croux

The Porte du Croux on the west side of the old center is an awe-inspiring piece of medieval heritage. You can see the chains on the drawbridge slits as you enter the city.

Promenade des Remparts

From the Porte du Croux, stroll down to the right bank of the Loire through a pretty garden bordered by the city’s old walls. To defend the Abbey of Notre Dame, the Count of Nevers, Pierre de Courtenay, built these defenses in the 12th century.

Église Saint-Étienne

Tourists rarely visit this church on the city’s east side, but those who appreciate historical architecture should pay a visit.

Nevers Magny-Cours Circuit

For those familiar with motor racing, this racetrack hosted the French Grand Prix every year until 2008.

Espace Bernadette

Nevers is also an important pilgrimage site because it was here that Bernadette Soubirous became a postulant and worked in a convent until she died in 1879. Soubirou was the witness to the supposed Marian Apparition that transformed the town of Lourdes into a primary Catholic pilgrimage site.

Église Sainte-Bernadette du Banlay

The architecture of this church is nothing like that of the old center in Nevers’ northern suburbs. This church resembles a German concrete bunker so closely that you’ll think you’ve found a relic from World War II.
