Nice Overview

Located on the Baie des Anges pebbly shores, Nice is the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes department on the French Riviera. The Greeks founded the city, which later became a retreat for European elites in the 19th century. A collection of works by former resident Henri Matisse is on display at the Musée Matisse. A number of the significant religious works of Marc Chagall can be seen at the Musée Marc Chagall.

History

Hominid settlements in the Nice area date back about 400,000 years (homo erectus); the Terra Amata archeological site contains the first evidence of fire, houses, and flint dating back to around 230,000 years ago. Colonists from the Greek city of Phocaea in western Anatolia probably founded Nice around 350 BC. This area was given its name after victory over the nearby Ligurians (people from northwest Italy, probably from the Vedianti kingdom); Nike (Νίκη) was the Greek goddess of victory. Despite becoming one of the most important trading ports on the Ligurian coast, the city had a powerful rival of the Roman town of Cemenelum, which remained independent until the invasion of the Lombards. Now a district of Nice, Cimiez is the site of Cemenelum’s ruins.

As a member of the Genoese League, Nice joined the towns of Liguria in the 7th century. Saracen raids were repulsed in 729, but in 859 and again in 880, the Saracens pillaged and burned the city, and for much of the 10th century, they controlled the surrounding area.

Nice was essential in Italian history and wars during the Middle Ages. Due to its alliance with Pisa, it was the enemy of Genoa, and both the King of France and the Holy Roman Emperor attempted to subjugate it; nevertheless, it maintained its municipal liberties. Despite being related to Genoa, the city repeatedly fell into the hands of the Counts of Provence in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Geography

There are two large bays in Nice. A gently curving bay separates Villefranche-sur-Mer from the old port city, which occupies the central part of the city’s expansion. From the flat beach to the gently rising hills, the town is surrounded by the Southern and Western extent of the Ligurian Alps.

Climate

Nice enjoys mild winters with moderate rainfall due to its hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen: Csa). The Mediterranean climate here is one of the warmest in its latitude. There is a lot of sunshine, a warm to hot summer, and a dry summer. During this time of year, there is rarely any rainfall, and typically only one or two days throughout July are measurable. There are usually more than 26 °C (79 °F) in the air but rarely more than 32 °C (90 °F).

Economy and tourism

Nice is home to the Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie Nice Côte d’Azur, which manages the Port of Nice. The Côte d’Azur Economic Development Agency Team Côte d’Azur offers assistance to investors from France and abroad.

The Palais des Congrès Acropolis is Nice’s conference center. In addition to the Arenas, Nice the Plain, Nice Méridia, Saint Isidore, and the Northern Forum, the city also has several business parks.

Several shopping centers are located in the city, including Nicetoile, Nice TNL, Nice Lingostière, Northern Forum, St-Isidore, the Trinity (around the Auchan hypermarket), Cap3000 in Saint-Laurent-du-Var and Polygone Riviera in Cagnes-sur-Mer.

A technology park northwest of Antibes is Sophia Antipolis. A large portion of the park is located within the municipality of Valbonne. Between 1970 and 1984, it housed mainly companies involved in computing, electronics, pharmacology, and biotechnology. Several higher learning institutions and the European headquarters of W3C are also located here.

Transport

  • Port – Nice’s main port is also called Lympia.
  • Airport – After Charles de Gaulle Airport and Orly Airport in Paris, Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is France’s third busiest airport. There are two terminals at this airport, located near l’Arénas on the Promenade des Anglais.
  • Rail – Nice-Ville is the central railway station, with TGV trains linking Paris and Nice in less than six hours and TER trains for commuters.
  • Tram – The Nice Tramway began operating horse-drawn trams in 1879. As a result of the network’s electrification in 1900, it reached a combined length of 144 km (89+1+2 mi) by 1930.
  • Road – Nice is located near the autoroute A8 and the Route nationale 7.

Population

Cuisine

Nice’s cuisine is remarkably similar to Provence and Liguria’s cuisine. It uses local ingredients (olive oil, anchovies, fruit, and vegetables) and those from more remote regions, notably Northern Europe because ships that came to pick up olive oil also brought food products like dried haddock into the city.

The local cuisine in Nice is quite diverse. Anchovies and onions make a local tart named “Pissaladière.” The chickpea flour used in socca is derived from chickpeas. Niçoise farces are stuffed vegetables with breadcrumbs, meat (generally sausage and ground beef), and herbs, and salade niçoise is a tomato salad with corn peppers, eggs, tuna, or anchovies.

What is Nice France known for?

Excellent, the fifth largest city in France, acts as a magnet attracting people from all over the world for various reasons. Acropolis and Sophia Antipolis have made Nice a center for research in science, industry, and advanced technology, in addition to its grace.

Why is a Nice city famous?
