Nimes Overview

The Roman Empire had an essential outpost in Nîmes, a city in the Occitanie region of southern France. In addition to its well-preserved Roman monuments, it also boasts a double-tiered arena used for concerts and bullfights. There are around 2,000 years of history in the Pont du Gard tri-level aqueduct and the Maison Carrée white limestone Roman temple.

Origins

Nimes lies on the alluvial plain of the Vistrenque River, surrounded by the hills of Mont Duplan to the northeast, Montaury to the southwest, and Mt. Cavalier and the Canteduc knoll to the west.

In inscriptions in Gaulish, its name appears as dede mature Namausikabo (“he has given to the mothers of Nîmes”) and “toutios Namausatis” (“citizen of Nîmes”).

There was a local tribe called Volcae Arecomici that worshipped Nemausus.

History

Located on the Via Domitia that connected Italy and Hispania, the city arose at a critical juncture.

Early coins bearing the abbreviation NEM COL, “Colony of Nemausus,” indicate that Nîmes became a Roman colony sometime before 28 BCE. During Julius Caesar’s Nile campaigns, veterans of his legions were given plots of land to cultivate.

As elsewhere in the Empire, the city underwent a significant building program under Augustus. There are still two gates in the town today – the Porta Augusta and the Porte de France – that are part of a 6 km (3.7 mile) long ring of ramparts reinforced by 14 towers.

A temple dating from the late 1st century BCE, the Maison Carrée is one of the best-preserved temples in the former Roman Empire.

It was built to bring water from the hills to the north via the great Nimes Aqueduct. Many of its remains can still be seen today outside of the city. A magnificent Pont du Gard was built between Uzès and Remoulins, where it crossed the Gard River. There is a 20 km (12 mi) distance between the city and this location.

Numerous delicate objects were found in and near the city, including mosaic floors, frescoes, and sculptures from rich houses and buildings. In addition to the civil basilica, there was a curia, a gymnasium, and possibly a circus in the town. One of the largest theaters in the Empire, the amphitheatre is very well preserved and dates from the end of the 2nd century. A nymphaeum within the Fontaine Sanctuary dedicated to Augustus and possibly a library was the Temple of Diana, which dated from Augustus and was rebuilt in the 2nd century.

Climate

Nîmes has one of the warmest climates in France. Summers are too wet for the city to be classified as a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen: Csa). It has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa). As a result of its slightly inland, southerly location, the city experiences hot weather during the summer: temperatures above 34 °C are ordinary in July and August, while winters are moderate. It is common for nighttime temperatures to drop below 0°C from December to February, while snowfall is a regular occurrence.

Economy

Textiles have been an essential part of Nîmes’ history. This city (Serge de Nîmes) gave its name to denim, the fabric of blue jeans. Originally from Lahore, the capital of the Great Mughals, the blue dye was imported via Genoa.

Population

In 50 A.D., the people of Roman Nîmes were estimated to be between 50 and 60,000. Yet, the most significant growth in the city happened in 1968, with a gain of +23.5% compared to 1962, as its population increased from 128,471 to 146,709 in 2012.

Culture

Joseph Gergonne published Annales de Gergonne, a scientific journal specializing in mathematics from Nîmes between 1810 and 1822.

Asteroid 51 Nemausa was discovered in 1858 near Nîmes.

Feria de Nîmes (festival) is held in Nîmes twice a year, and several hundred thousand people attend.

A live album, Volkerball, was filmed in Nîmes in 2005, and Rammstein will return in 2017.

During the World Magnetic Tour 2009, Metallica recorded the live DVD Français Pour une Nuit (English: French for One Night) in Nîmes, France.

Transportation

Nîmes-Alès-Camargue-Cévennes Airport serves the city, although its proximity to Montpellier Airport has hindered its popularity. Motorways A9 and A54 connect Nîmes with Orange, Montpellier, Narbonne, and Perpignan. The railway station in Nîmes offers connections to Paris (high-speed rail), Marseille, Montpellier, Narbonne, Toulouse, Perpignan, Figueres, and Barcelona in Spain as several regional destinations. On 15 December 2019, the new high-speed rail line Nîmes-Montpellier opened to passengers along with the new TGV station at Nîmes-Pont-du-Gard station, located 12km outside the city. A bus station is next to the railway station in the center of Nîmes. In towns and villages not served by rail, buses connect the city with nearby towns and villages.

Sport

Nîmes is home to the association football club Nîmes Olympique, currently playing in Ligue 2.

The World Archery Indoor World Cup is held in Nîmes in mid-January each year. There is a rugby union team in Nîmes called R.C. Nîmes.

A stage of the Tour de France is often held in the city, and it hosted the opening stages of the 2017 Vuelta an Espaa cycling race.
