There has been a distinguished history in the town. As part of the Kingdom of Hungary, it existed between the second half of the 10th century and 1918. Throughout 1573–81, a fortress was built on the site of an older settlement as a defense against the Ottoman Turks. Between 1589 and 1663, the payment served as a seat of Lower Hungary’s captaincy. Around the fortress, the town grew up. As one of the most modern fortresses in Europe when it was built, it was considered to be adapted to the advance in artillery in the century preceding. The Hungarian name translates as “archbishop’s new castle.”

Six times, the Turks failed to conquer it (except between 1566-1595[6] and 1605–1606), but they succeeded in 1663. In present-day southern Slovakia, it was the center of a Turkish eyalet with subordinate sanjaks Litra, Leve, Novigrad, Hook, Bukabak, and Şefradi (probably Šahy).

Working with determination and stability is reflected in the saying “Strong as a Turk in front of Nové Zámky,” which refers to the Turks’ conquest determination.

By 1685, the imperial troops of Charles V, Duke of Lorraine, had conquered it. After six years, it was granted town privileges by the archbishop of Esztergom.

During the 17th century, the town played an important role in many anti-Habsburg uprisings in northern Royal Hungary. During the reign of Charles VI, the fortress was razed to prevent further insurrections from taking place there.
