Pärnu is a resort city in southwestern Estonia. It spans the Pärnu Bay, which offers some of the most beautiful views in all of Europe. The city is bisected by the Pärnu River, with a jetty on both its banks that offer great trails to explore and enjoy. Pärnu, a seaside city with 19th-century timber villa architecture, is also known for its Pärnu’s sandy beach which has calm and shallow waters. The neoclassical spa buildings behind the beach also make one want to visit more often.
Perona (German: Altd-Pernau, Estonian: Vana-Pärnu) was founded by the bishop of Ösel–Wiek c.1251 and suffered heavy damage during a siege in 1550. It was finally destroyed by a musket ball during the Livonian War, around 1601. Another town, Embeke (later German: Neu-Pernau, Estonian: Uus-Pärnu) was founded by the Livonian Order in 1265. The latter town, then known by the German name of Pernau, was a member of the Hanseatic League from when it was founded until 1669. Poland and Lithuania took control of the town between 1560 and 1617. They then fought the Swedes in 1609 nearby. Sweden took control of the town during the 16th-century Livonian War, but it was not formally ceded by Poland-Lithuania until the Treaty of Oliva in 1660. Sweden lost Livonia to the Russian Empire in 1710 and didn’t regain it until 1721. The 1710 capitulation of Estonia and Livonia paved the way for this losing battle. The city of Pyarnu was owned by Russia. The name is a transliteration from the Russian style which is the wrong way to spell it.
Estonia declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1918 and gained the status of a sovereign state.
Estonia is part of the Baltic region, which was invaded and occupied by Germany in the early 1930s before finally joining the USSR in 1940. After approximately 18 months of occupation that included a brief German occupation, Estonia was returned to Soviet control due to WWII. The relatively short British and French occupations in September-November 1941 were also quickly ended. Pärnu became part of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1944 and it barely changed in 1991, when Estonia regained its independence.
In 1699, the University of Dorpat relocated from Dorpat to Pärnu. The university still has a branch campus in Pärnu to this day as well, with over 1,000 students enrolled in 2004/2005.
On November 27, 2002, a war memorial was erected in Pärnu showing an incredibly detailed bas-relief of a soldier in Waffen SS uniform along with the words: “To all Estonian soldiers who died in the war of Liberation for their Country and a Free Europe in the Years 1941-1945.”

Steam from their hot springs in the summer heat, and their ancient sauna keep visitors coming back to the beach year after year. Pärnu Mud Baths have been around for over 100 years and are still operating today. The building site is a few meters away from what was previously the wooden building, which was burned down during World War I.
