Around 85 kilometers from the Spanish border, Pau is located along the northern edge of the Pyrenees mountains in southwestern France. On clear days, you can see countryside views and mountain panoramas from the Boulevard des Pyrénées in central Pau. There is a boulevard leading up to the Château de Pau, where King Henry IV of France and Navarre was born. The museum now displays tapestries, period furnishings, and artwork.
Pau is 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean and 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the Pyrenees border with Spain. The col du Somport (1,631 meters (5,351 feet)) and the col du Pourtalet (1,794 m (5,886 ft)) cross the frontier. One of the reasons for Pau’s strategic significance is its accessibility to the crossings.
It is located 200 kilometers (124 miles) west of Toulouse, 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Tarbes and Lourdes, and 25 kilometers (16 miles) from Oloron. A conglomeration of Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz and Bordeaux is 110 km (68 mi) apart.
The Pau Pyrénées Airport is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from Pau. The cities of Amsterdam, London, Southampton, Dublin, Lyon, and Paris are served by limited scheduled flights.
The TGV rail line runs from Bayonne to Toulouse and Paris to Bayonne. The A64 autoroute runs eastward. In December 2010, the A65 autoroute was opened, linking Pau with Bordeaux and the Dordogne. Two tunnels connecting the city to Spain are the Somport tunnel and the Col du Pourtalet tunnel.
In Pau, winters are mild and wet, while summers are warm and dry. In contrast to the cold environment of the Pyrenees, the city has a warm oceanic climate due to its location. In general, temperatures below 15 °C (5.0 °F) are rare, and those below ten °C (14.0 °F) are exceptional. In February 1956, the temperature dropped below 15°C (5.0°F), and in January 1985, it dropped below 17.5°C (0.5°F). From November to March, snow falls about three days per year (0.45 meters (18 inches) in 1987).
It needs to be clarified where the name originated. From the barrier around the original château, it is believed to have been derived from a pal (fr. pieu). Another explanation is that the name refers to a ford across the river managed by the church, the pious. In recent research, Michel Grosclaude and other onomasticians have concluded that the pre-Indo-European root for a rockface was pal or bal and that the name refers to Pau’s geographical location at the foot of the mountains. The fortification, from the Latin palum, has the exact ancient origins, but it is not this meaning that led to the name Pau, which is compared to the Col de Pau in the Aspe Valley (1,942 meters (6,371 feet), Lescun) which has no connection to the city. According to the Béarnese dialect, it is called Pau.
There is no evidence that the city’s construction site was occupied before the 10th century. Places with unique qualities were chosen for the construction of the town. The Gave de Pau, which descends from the Pyrenees, was a river that was pretty difficult to cross, and it had only three fords over a distance of approximately 50 kilometers (31 mi): from Nay to the east, Orthez to the west and Pau, strategically located between these. Nearly 80 meters (260 feet) of this ford are visible from the northern end of a plateau formed to a point. Around the year 1000, a small monitoring station, surrounded by a simple barrier, was built to control the passage and arrivals from the Pyrenees.
To control the ford across the Gave de Pau, the site was fortified in the 11th century. In that spot, it was built equidistant from Lescar, a bishop’s seat, and Morlaàs, the council chair.
Some houses were combined in a small hamlet in this fort until the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, this new village was granted the status of Viguerie (a small administrative district) by the lords of Béarn. Paü was the name of a fortification in Bearnese, and the name of the city is believed to have originated from this.
Pau, which had become the town of Castelnau in the 13th century, received new recognition and expansion with the appointment of bacilli by the viscounts of Béarn. During this time, the English settled in the southwest, and the counts of Foix acquired sovereignty over Béarn. Allegiance to the King of England and the Kingdom of France was determined by the political interests of the moment.
According to the 2010 census, the communal population of Pau amounts to 81,166 (legal populations as of 1 January 2013). It is estimated that there are 170,000 residents living in the commune of Pau Béarn Pyrénées.
There were 77,130 residents in the commune in 2017.
There are more than 160 restaurants in Pau, located in the historic city center (Château, Hédas). There are several quarters in the Béarnaise capital that are mainly active at night, including the triangle, the Boulevard des Pyrénées, and the Rue des orphelines.
It is known for its strong cultural identity, which is reflected in the presence of bilingual French-Occitan schools (Calandra Paulina) in Pau and one in Lescar (60 students), in the fact of the Béarnese living tradition and the success of Occitan cultural groups throughout the metropolitan area. With a large English student community, Dutch, Portuguese, Spaniards, and Moroccans residing in the city, the city has, however, received significant influences from foreign countries (English, Spanish, Russian, Brazilian). City fairs are popular among the Pau people near Dax, Bayonne, and Biarritz. There are many Béarnese singing groups, such as Nadau, Lo Cèu de Pau, and Balaguera, as well as bands and bodegas (drinks places with typical animation). The city has hosted Hestiv’oc, one of the biggest festivals in Occitania, since 2005. Concerts and cultural events are frequently held at the University of Pau, Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour.
Pau relied heavily on natural gas, and sulfur production found near Lacq from the 1950s to the 1990s. Agribusiness and tourism, along with the oil industry, are the mainstays of the Béarn area in the 21st century. As part of TotalEnergies, Elf Aquitaine was born in Pau. There is an office of Halliburton in Pau.
Located 45 minutes from the Pyrenees and its ski resorts, Pau is ideal for those who like to escape the city. Located in Spain, it is a popular holiday resort for visitors to the Pyrenees (hiking, climbing, skiing). In this region (an hour’s drive from the Basque and Landes coasts), water sports (surfing, diving, sailing, etc.) are available.
Located in a region rich with art and history, Pau boasts magnificent buildings throughout its territory, including a national stud farm, palaces, villas, museums, and a castle. It has more than 750 acres of green space and many rare and exotic species as green cities.
Only about 80,000 people live in Pau, a small French city off the beaten track. Henry IV of France was born at the Chateau de Pau, one of France’s most beautiful castles.
The site has been occupied since at least the Gallo-Roman era. According to Alphonse de Lamartine, “Pau has the world’s most beautiful view of the earth, just as Naples has the world’s most beautiful view of the sea.” Only in the first half of the 12th century was Pau mentioned as a settlement for the first time.
Tours in French and Spanish are available; they last an hour and take the visitor through a sequence of luxuriously decorated rooms with coffered ceilings, gilded walls, precious paintings, and Gobelin tapestries.
One of France’s most extraordinary streets, Boulevard des Pyrénées was built in the late 19th century. A terrace at the top of the cliff above the Gave de Pau connects the Château de Pau to the Parc Beaumont 800 meters east.
With trains rumbling up and down the 30% gradient between the Gare de Pau and the Boulevard des Pyrénées from dawn to dark, the funicular railway has been operating for more than a century.
Louis la Caze donated 30 significant paintings in the 1800s to Pau’s fine arts museum, which boasts a superb collection.
This museum relates one of the fascinating tales of the Napoleonic era at the birthplace of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte. A prosecutor’s son from Pau, Bernadotte, came from relatively humble circumstances.
Many English villas were built in the plush green Trespoey quarter, a short distance from the city center.
Some charming lanes surround the castle, with architecture dating back as far as 500 years. The oldest part of Pau is, by far, this area since it was all there was to the city in its earliest days.
Named for the stream that used to flow through it, this district is located beneath the Château to the north. Because the Hédas cut a deep valley through this part of the city, it’s easy to see its course.
Trailing the arrival of wealthy Brits who needed entertainment for their winter stays, the equestrian industry in the Béarn region took off in the mid-1800s.
Established in 1856, Pau Golf Club is the oldest golf course in mainland Europe and the first golf course founded outside of British territory.
