Pecs Overview
Pécs is one of Hungary’s most prevalent cities, with a lot to offer. It was founded by the Romans and has sites like the Early Christian Mausoleum, featuring frescoed tombs. Sitting underneath a beautiful domed cathedral, green surrounding the city is a mosque that was built in the 16th century during the Ottoman period. Iconic and stunningly beautiful, this Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kasim still stands today as a Catholic church.
Name
In ancient Roman times, the territory was known as Sopianæ. Given that it means “marsh”, this may point to how it got its name. Contrary to the popular belief, there is no evidence of a single city from the early Roman era, only from the 4th century.
A city called Quinque Basilicae first appeared in 871. The name refers to the fact that it contains five old chapels. The city was mentioned in later Latin documents before Quinque Ecclesiae. It had a name identical to the German name Fünfkirchen and the Slovak name Päťkostolie.
Geography
Pécs is an interesting city that has been historically significant as a trade hub and as the site of many battles. It can be found in Romania, Hungary, and Croatia. Pécs has a significant mining past. Mecsek dolomitic water is famous for its high density of minerals at constant pressure.
The city of Pécs is located on the border of Croatia. They’re a pretty flat city, but the northern part is where you’ll find the mountains. People in Budapest enjoy an incredibly warm climate and are surrounded by trees covered in ice. The evenings in summertime bring cool winds down from Mecsek, which clean the air of the city.
The city of Pécs lies on the flat plains of central Hungary. The Mecsek mountain range lies to the north and its peaks rise over 600 meters above sea level. There is a hill near Pécs called Jakab-hill. It is 592 m (1942 ft) tall, Tubes, straight above Pécs, are 612 m (2008 ft) tall and Messina is 535 m (1755 ft) tall. Higher parts of the city climb up to 200–250 meters, mainly Pécs. Mecsek Hills are the hills in the center that run east-west through the center of Budapest. At elevation, they are about 300 meters (984 feet) and their valleys act like natural air filters, which is hard to find in Budapest. The Mecsek hills run down into the Danube, which they join near Pecs.
History
Celtic people were living in the area before the Roman era started. The oldest archaeological findings of their civilization are 6,000 years old.
The city of Sopianae was founded in the 2nd century by Romans. It was then inhabited by Celts, and Pannonii tribes and became the capital of Valeria province in the 4th century. It became a significant early Christian center. The necropolis from that era is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its incredible history.
Western Hungary is where Pannonia was founded and the Romans brought with them, several wine-producing colonists. It’s located near Pécs and was established in the early 2nd century CE.
The center of the ancient settlement Spartions, now called Sopianae, is where the Bishop’s Palace now stands. Some parts of the Roman aqueduct are still visible. The ancient Roman town was divided into four administrative divisions: Valeria.
Sopianae is a city of the ancient Roman Empire, and its Christian cemetery had been inscribed on the World Heritage List by the end of the 4th century. The city was also part of Rome’s territory by this time since its governmental system was replaced with a monarchy.
Demographics
According to the 2011 census, 84% of Budapest’s inhabitants are Hungarian, with 4.2% being German and 2.0% being Roma. The next largest minority is Croats at 1.2%. And since there were so few Romanians in the city in 2011, 0.2% is all that can be said about that particular minority group.
The Christians make up the largest religious group here. They are split into two groups: Catholics, who account for 39.7% of the population, and Calvinists, who together account for 5.2%. The Lutherans total 1.3%, and 27.8% of the population identify themselves as non-religious.”
Climate
In Pécs, summers are warm and winters are not as cold. The temperature changes very little throughout the year, with a mean of 28°F to 82°F. Summer temperatures rarely drop below 16°F and do not exceed 91°F in winter. The most enjoyable time of year to visit Pécs is between late May and mid-September.
Economy
Many factories that had a strong connection to Pécs went bankrupt after the fall of the Iron Curtain. They weren’t able to successfully transition into modern times on their own and also needed money to get started again. In the 19th century, this town had a coal and uranium mine. It was also the site where a man named János Bolyai created his famous work on non-Euclidean geometry. Today only its sand mine remains, owned by the Hungarian-owned Quartz mining company.
This famous porcelain company is the greatest pride of Pécs – its walls and roofs are all decorated with their creations.
Pécsi, the brewery that produces Pécs special beer, is one of Hungary’s 4 main breweries, but the only one run by Hungarians. Its most popular brand is Pécs, which is known for being unique because all its ingredients are locally sourced (only it has never brewed a traditional lager).
Education
Founded in 1367, the University of Pécs is the oldest university in Hungary and among the first European universities. In the recent past, some universities were divided into two: one for medicine and orthodontics and a larger one for other studies. Squarely in the center of Buda, on Janus Pannonius square, there is now a university serving all students. POTE has several bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in English, as well as a new master’s degree program. Students from around the world attend school. One of the major events in recent history was the merging of these universities on 1st January 2000. They were called UoP, or University of Pécs (acronym: UTE – Pécsi Tudományegyetem – University of Pécs). The University of Pécs has become more internationalized in the past few years. Its student body is now made up of around 3/4 of students from foreign countries (approximately 25% from outside Hungary).
