Located close to the Mediterranean coast and the Spanish border, Perpignan is a city in southern France. A significant Catalan influence can be seen in its medieval core, which served as the capital of the Kingdom of Majorca during the 13th century. The Gothic-and-Romanesque Palace of the Kings of Majorca has ramparts with views of the coast south of the old town.
During 2016, Perpignan had a population of 121,875 (Perpignanais(e) in French, Perpinyanés(a) in Catalan) in the commune proper, and 268,577 in the metropolitan area, making it the last major French city before the Spanish border.

Like most of the Mediterranean coast in France, Perpignan enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa). The city’s annual precipitation levels are similar to the national average, although one might expect rain to be scarce here. In contrast, the town experiences sporadic rainfall that can last for weeks or even months, then disappears for weeks or months. The summers in Perpignan are sweltering, and the winters are relatively mild. There has not been much snow in decades, and temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
Perpignan was named Perpinianum in 927, Villa Perpiniano in 959, Pirpinianum in the 11th century, and Perpiniani in 1176. Until the 15th century, Perpenyà was the most common form, and it was still used in the 17th century. There is a possibility that it comes from the Roman name Perpennius.
The medieval town of Perpignan was founded around the beginning of the 10th century, although settlement dates back to Roman times. After that, Perpignan became the capital of the Roussillon counts, and Septimania was historically a region of this area. A legacy from Girard II to the Counts of Barcelona was made in 1172. In 1197, Perpignan gained the institutions of a partly self-governing commune. According to the Treaty of Corbeil, Louis IX gave up French feudal rights over Roussillon.
Perpignan became the capital of the mainland territories of Majorca after James I the Conqueror founded the Kingdom of Majorca in 1276. As far as the city’s history is concerned, the following decades are considered the golden age. In addition to cloth manufacturing, leatherwork, goldsmithing, and other luxury crafts, it prospered as a textile center. Philippe III of France died there when he returned from an unsuccessful crusade against the Aragonese Crown in 1285.
During the reign of Peter IV of Aragon in 1344, the Kingdom of Majorca was annexed to the County of Barcelona, and Perpignan once more became a part of it. The Black Death wiped out about half of its population a few years later. Louis XI of France invaded and occupied it in 1463; in 1473, a violent uprising against French rule was brutally suppressed after a long siege, but in 1493, to conciliate Castile so that he could invade Italy, Charles VIII returned it to Ferdinand II of Aragon.

Wine, olive oil, corks (the cork oak Quercus suber grows in Perpignan’s mild climate), wool, leather, and iron were traditional commodities.
