Piestany Overview
It is located in Slovakia. The city lies in the Trnava Region in the western part of the country and is the seat of its district. The town has around 28,000 residents and is Slovakia’s most extensive and best-known spa.
Etymology
This name derives from Slovak Piesok (sand), which refers to local sandbanks. The etymology is straightforward – Piešťanci – people who live on the sandy site and Piešťany – their settlement.
History
Humans first settled the area about 80,000 years ago, during the prehistoric period. The game was abundant near the thermal springs that didn’t freeze in Winter, which attracted people to the site.
The nearby village Moravany nad Váhom has a slight female statue known as Venus of Moravany. This item was made from mammoth ivory and dated back to 22,800 BC. Currently, it is on display in the museum of Bratislava Castle. In another nearby village, Krakovany-Stráže, luxury items made of glass, bronze, silver, and gold were discovered in three graves dating from 200 to 300. The surroundings of Piešťany also include the Great Moravian castle of Ducové.
Piešťany first appears in written records in 1113 (under Pecan). In those days, it was composed of several smaller settlements. It was already famous during the Middle Ages for people to visit the medicinal springs. A visit from Matthias Corvinus, king of Hungary, was paid to them. In 1549, Georgius Wernher published De admirals Hungariae Aquis hypothecation (About the Miraculous Waters of the Hungarian Monarchy). Johann Crato of Crafheim (who served several Holy Roman Emperors) and Andrea Baccius Elpidianus (a physician to the Pope) both referred to the Piedany spa in the 16th century. It was published in 1745 when Ján Justus Torko published his first monograph, Thermis Postheinsibus. The region suffered Turkish raids and Abbsburg repression in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Several noble families owned the area throughout the centuries; the last, the Erdidys, held it from 1720 to 1848 and the spa until 1940. The Erdődy family created the first spa buildings in 1778. During the flood of 1813, they were severely damaged. Neoclassical-style neo-classical buildings were constructed in 1820 and named Napoleon Spa. It was during this time that the Eddy family established the Spa park. During the winters of 1889 to 1940, the Winter family leased the Erddys’ spa and made it internationally known. Ľudovít Winter improved spa treatment, accommodation, and entertainment for visitors. They built several spa buildings and hotels.
Geography
Piešťany lies in the valley of the Váh river, in the western part of Slovakia, at an elevation of 162 meters (531.50 feet). The Považský Inovec mountains form the eastern boundary of this area of the Váh valley. About 25 kilometers (16 miles) north of the town is the highest peak of these mountains, Inovec 1,042 m (3,418.64 ft). Approximately 700 m (2,296.59 ft) of hills are located immediately east of the town (10 km (6 mi) away). A valley boundary is formed by the Little Carpathians, which are somewhat lower and farther from the city on the western side. A warm and sunny temperate climate prevails in the valley because it is open to the south.
Climate
Piebany has a temperate summer, cold winters, and partly cloudy skies. Temperatures typically range between 24°F and 79°F throughout the year, rarely falling below 10°F or rising above 90°F. The best time of year to visit Piešťany for warm-weather activities is from early June to early September.
Main sights
The most buildings date from the 19th and 20th centuries due to frequent flooding in the past. A medieval monastery from the 13th century is the only notable exception. Between 1822 and 1862, the Napoleon Spa was constructed as a complex of Neoclassical spa buildings. The town also has a Catholic church that dates from the same period. This preeminent functionalist bridge, built by Emil Bellu in 1930–33, contains many valuable art objects. An airport museum houses the Military History Museum Piešťany.
Demographics
The population of the town was 30,306 at the 2001 census. 96.30% of the population were Slovaks, 1.69% Czechs, and 0.27% Hungarians. Seventy-two percent of the population was Roman Catholic, 16.71% were unaffiliated, and 5.96% were Lutherans.
Economy
The Czechoslovak electronics manufacturer Tesla Pieany was one of the city’s largest employers during the communist era. In 1991, it closed down, and in 1998, ON Semiconductor acquired its factories. The company retained a small customer support center in the town. A company founded in 1993, Delipro, s.r.o., manufactures quartz crystals, continuing the region’s electronic manufacturing legacy.
The town is also home to the Slovak headquarters of the financial services company Home Credit Slovakia. The Technical Standards Skobna Stava Pieany [sk] is an independent conformity assessment body for machinery & construction products & consumer goods. In terms of testing activities in the Slovak Republic, Technick skin stav Piecany is one of the oldest and largest testing bodies.
Culture
The town is well known in Slovakia for its rich cultural program. Summertime is a popular time for tourists to visit the city because of its cultural events. During the summer spa season, the opening (in June) and closing (in September) are marked by street festivals. It takes place in the House of Arts of Pieany every summer as an annual classical music festival. The festival was established in 1955.
