Poprad Overview

Poprad lies at the foot of Slovakia’s High Tatras Mountains. Located at the entrance to Tatras National Park, it is a gateway to the national park. A central square named Namestie Sv. A baroque building stands at Egidia Square, as does the 13th-century Church of St. Egidius. Among the oldest houses and churches in this area are those in Spiská Sobota, which are well preserved. In an old power plant, the Tatra Gallery displays visual art by Slovak and international artists.

History

Slavic settlers occupied the territory since the Migration Period. In the 13th century, German colonists settled in the area, and it became primarily Germanized, specifically Germandorf, meaning ‘Germans’ village.’ The first written record is dated March 16, 1256, in the deed of donation of Hungarian King Bela IV. As one of the Spis towns, Poprad was pawned by the Kingdom of Hungary to the Kingdom of Poland between 1412 and 1770, resulting in a substantial Polish influence in the city’s development. There was a decline in the number of Germans during the 17th century. This territory was placed under Czechoslovakia’s control in January 1919.

Until 1946, Poprad was one of several neighboring settlements that made up the modern city. Other parts of the current municipality are Matejovce (German: Matzdorf; Hungarian: Mateóc, first reference 1251), Spišská Sobota (German: Georgenberg; Hungarian: Szepesszombat, 1256), Veľká (German/Hungarian: Felka, 1268), and Stráže pod Tatrami (German: Michelsdorf; Hungarian: Strázsa, 1276). The most important of these original towns was Georgenberg, now Spiská Sobota, which held its position of power until the late 19th century.

During World War II, most Jewish transports to ghettos and concentration camps in German-occupied Poland left Poprad railway station. About 1,000 Jewish girls and young women left Poprad for Auschwitz-Birkenau on March 25, 1942. Over 58,000 Jews were deported from Slovakia to Poland via Poprad by the end of 1942 when the deportations ceased.

A Soviet 18th Army force liberated Poprad on January 28, 1945. A subsequent expulsion of the German population took place.

The development of winter sports made Poprad the starting point for expeditions to the High Tatras after the war.

Poprad bid for the 2006 Winter Olympics in 1999, but Turin, Italy, won.

Poprad is a gateway to the High Tatras, located on the Poprad River in the Sub-Tatra Basin. Several mountain ranges surround the city, including the Levoka Hills in the east, the Kozie Ctrbty in the south, and the Low Tatras in the southwest. There is a drainage divide between the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea near the village of Tuba to the west.

Landmarks

The St. Egidius square (Námestie svätého Egidia) is the heart of the historical center, and the court is lined with houses mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. One of the oldest churches in the city is the early-Gothic Catholic Church of St. Egidius.

Spiská Sobota was declared a Town Monument Reserve in 1953, making it another historical center near Poprad. This church contains five late-Gothic side altars and the main altar crafted by Master Paul of Levoča.

Government

From 2003 to 2014, Poprad’s mayor was Anton Danko (former international ice hockey referee). As a result of the November 2014 municipal elections, he lost to Jozef Vavagerko (KDH – Christian democrats).
