Presov Overview
Prešov is a city located in eastern Slovakia. A regional administrative center, it is also the seat of the historic Sáros County of the Kingdom of Hungary. The city has a population of about 90,000, and the metropolitan area has about 110,000, making it Slovakia’s third-largest city.
Etymology
The first written mention dates back to 1247 (Theutonici de Epuryes). According to several authors, the name is derived from the Hungarian word per (strawberry). A newer Slovak study suggests this spelling results from a phonetic adaptation of Slavic personal names (the addition of e before the initial consonant group and removal of the suffix), which led to the break up of the original form. Fragopolis (strawberry city) is a modern translation of the Latin Fragopolis (strawberry city) that appears on the coat of arms of Prev.
Characteristics
Baroque, Rococo and Gothic architecture characterize the old town. Buildings built in these styles line the historical center. Nevertheless, Soviet influence is evident in the suburbs through the massive concrete panel buildings of the housing estates (sdliska) and Sekov district. Near the city center, government buildings feature more Soviet-style architecture.
Among the major industries in the city are mechanical and electrical engineering companies and clothing manufacturers. Among the companies located in the town is Solivary, the only salt mining, and processing company in Slovakia. An Orthodox primate and a Greek Catholic metropolitan see are based in the city.
Topography
Preov is located at the confluence of the rivers Torysa and Sekov in the Koice Basin in eastern Slovakia. It is surrounded by Slanské vrchy on the east and Ariská archiving on the west.
History
Early Paleolithic humans lived in the area around Prev. Mammoth bones and tools discovered 28,000 years ago are among the oldest, and there has been a continuous settlement since the 8th century.
Following the Mongol invasion in 1241, King Béla IV of Hungary invited German colonists to fill the void in the population. Prešov was elevated to the rank of a royal free town by Louis the Great in 1347, following the Zipser German and Carpathian German settlements.
He helped create the Pentapolitana, a trading organization of five towns, in 1412. It was 1429 when the first school was recorded. After the collapse of the old Kingdom of Hungary after the Ottoman invasion of 1526, Prešov became a border city and switched hands several times between two usually rivalrous domains, Habsburg Royal Hungary and the Hungarian states generally backed by the Ottomans: the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom, Transylvania, and Upper Hungary.
Still, Prešov experienced an economic boom due to trade with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. German-Hungarian, Polish, and Greek wine merchants in the 16th century brought grape vines from the nearby Tokaj wine region. There were some first books written in German on Tokaj wine in Prešov.
A salt mine was first established in Solivar in 1572 (subsequently incorporated into Prešov).
Prešov played an essential role in the Protestant Reformation. The town was at the front line of the Bocskai Uprising in 1604-1606 when Imperial Army commander Giorgio Basta retreated there after failing to take Košice from the Protestant rebels.
Geography
Prešov lies 250 meters (820 feet) above sea level and covers 70.4 square kilometers (27.2 square miles). It is located in the northeastern part of Slovakia, at the confluence of the Torysa River and its tributary Skov. It is situated near the Slanské vrchy (southeast), the Ariská archiving (southwest), the Bachure (west), and the Ergo (North) mountain ranges. Approximately 34 km (21 miles) away is the neighboring city of Koice. About 410 km (250 mi) northeast of Bratislava, Preov lies about 50 km (31 mi) south of the Polish border, 60 km (37 mi) North of the Hungarian border, and 60 km (37 mi) North of the Hungarian border (by road).
Climate
A warm, humid weather characterizes Pre-ov on a continental plateau bordering the ocean. A significant difference between slightly warm summers and somewhat cold, snowy winters is characteristic of Preov’s four distinct seasons.
Population
The 2011 census shows Prelov had 91 782 residents, 85.9% Slovak, 1.70 % Romani, 1.59 % Rusyn, 0.7 % Ukrainian, 0.48% Czech, 0.14% Hungarian, and 13.8% did not declare their nationality.
Religion
55.8% of the population are Roman Catholics, 12.4% are unaffiliated, 8.15 percent are Greek Catholics, 4.05% are Lutherans, 1.55% are Orthodox, and 17.16% have no religious affiliation. The number of atheists, Greek Catholics, and unidentified individuals has increased.

Education
Prev has two primary tertiary education institutions: the University of Preov, with 12,600 students, including 867 doctoral students, and the private International Business College ISM Slovakia. In addition, the school has a Faculty of Manufacturing Technologies.
There are 15 public primary schools, six private primary schools, and two religious primary schools in the city. Nine thousand seven hundred and seventy-nine pupils are enrolled there. With 3,675 students, the city has ten gymnasia, four specialized high schools, and 11 vocational schools.
