A part of the town’s archives was burned during the Kuruc uprising in 1673. Two thousand seven hundred and ninety-nine people lived there in 1870. With the construction of the railways to Prievidza at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the industry began to grow. Partisans flocked to the city during World War II. Troops of the Soviet 40th Army captured Prievidza on 4 April 1945. From 5,000 to 53,000 people, the population has grown tremendously since the end of the war. The mines, power plant, and chemical factory in Nováky, just across the river from Prievidza, became home to many miners and workers.
