Purmerend Overview
In the west of the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland and the region of West Friesland, Purmerend is a city and municipality. In addition to the Purmer, Beemster, and Wormer polders, the town is surrounded by polders. Despite being the trade center for the region, the city only grew slowly in population.
Early history
On the south bank of the river De Weere, which used to connect the former Purmermeer and Beemstermeer, Purmerend was formed from the small fishing village Purmer, which was situated between Purmermeer (Purmer Lake), Beemstermeer (Beemster Lake) and Wormermeer (Wormer Lake).
An Amsterdam banker named Willem Eggert founded Purmerend. Slot Purmerstein built slot Purmerstein in 1410 with permission from HRH Count William VI of Holland (Willem VI van Holland). After falling into decline, the castle was demolished in 1741 after its construction was completed in 1413. Purmerend was granted city rights in 1434 and on 21 April 1484 (some sources claim 14 April 1484), Count Jan van Egmond gave the city “marktrechten” (the right to hold two annual markets and one weekly market). Merchants outside of Purmerend could now sell their goods on the market, and food products were only allowed to be sold before 1484 to its population.
Geography
Purmerend lies in the swampy and watery Waterland area. They dug ditches parallel to each other to drain excess water from the land, which mainly consisted of turf (even). This process caused the ground to sink as a result. As a result, agriculture became nearly impossible at the time due to a never-ending battle with the water. In addition, all structures had to be built on a natural hill or artificial Terp. Purmerend was built on the bank of a river that connected Beemster and Purmer lakes, the former known as the De Where.
