History
In 1148, Abbot Suger, the chief minister of Louis VI and Louis VII, established a landed estate named Putiauz, which became a village. Suger also established the settlements Carrières-sur-Seine, Vaucresson, and Villeneuve-la-Garenne to attract people into the region. Several privileges were granted to the residents by Suger to reinforce this.
It is thought that Putiauz derives from the old French Putel, which means “quagmire” or “swamp,” referring to the condition of the area before it was drained for agriculture. The name Puteaux comes from the Latin word luteolin, the plural of potholes, meaning “little wells” or “water holes.” “Puteaux” is believed to have been used for the first time in the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries.
According to legend, Jean de La Fontaine’s story of the gadfly was inspired by Puteaux.
Geography
Puteaux lies on the right bank of the River Seine, bordering Courbevoie to the north, Nanterre to the west, and Suresnes to the south. The Puteaux Bridge and the Neuilly Bridge (also used by Paris Métro Line 1) connect Puteaux with Paris in the east. In addition to the Île de Puteaux, which lies on the Seine, Puteaux covers most of the commune’s territory.

Puteaux is characterized by short, comfortable, partly cloudy summers and long, cold, windy, mostly cloudy winters. There is rarely a day below 25°F or a day above 88°F during the year, with temperatures typically ranging from 35°F to 78°F. Mid-June to mid-September is the best time to visit Puteaux for warm-weather activities.

Puteaux is one of the wealthiest communes in France, thanks to its tax revenue from La Défense. Forty million euros in revenue are generated by companies in the Puteaux district alone every year. Despite being debt-free, Puteaux has ten million euros in financial reserves held in Treasury bills. Puteaux can have a budget exceeding 200 million euros (reference 2005), despite having only 42,000 residents.
Transport
There are two train stations in Puteaux: Transilien La Défense and Transilien Paris – Saint-Lazare.
Esplanade de la Défense station on Paris Métro Line 1, located in La Défense business district, as well as La Défense station, a large interchange station on Paris Métro Line 1, on Paris RER line A, Transilien Paris – Saint-Lazare suburban rail line, and Transilien Paris – Saint-Lazare suburban rail line. Puteaux is also served by the T2 (tramway 2), which runs between La Défense and Issy-Val de Seine.
Sport
The Cercle de Puteaux hosted tennis events at the 1900 Summer Olympics.
