Etymology

Quimper comes from the Breton kemper, which means “confluent.”

History

Quimper was once the ancient capital of Cornouaille, one of Brittany’s most traditional regions. It has a distinctive Breton Celtic flavor. Its name is derived from the Breton word kemper, which is related to the Welsh word Cymer, meaning a point of convergence. As a result of the confluence of the rivers Le Steir and L’Odet, the town developed. The Celtic heritage of the region is celebrated through shops and flags.

Originally, Quimper was settled by the Romans. The town had become a diocese by AD 495, and the counts of Cornouailles subsequently made it their capital. A union with the Duchy of Brittany took place in the eleventh century. A considerable amount of damage was caused to the town during the War of the Breton Succession (1341-1364). During the House of Montfort, the duchy passed to them in 1364.

Footbridges span the rivers that flow through the town, giving it a rustic atmosphere: an eleventh-century Romanesque structure, the Church of Locmaria. During the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries, Saint-Corentin Cathedral was constructed with a Gothic-style façade. This is the oldest Gothic structure in lower Brittany. In the nineteenth century, its spires were added to its two towers measuring 76 m (250 feet). Exceptional stained glass windows date back to the fifteenth century. In the cathedral is a monument dedicated to Corentin, the first bishop of Quimper.

Quimper faience, a tin-glazed pottery, is the town’s most well-known product. From 1690 to the present, it has been made here using the bold provincial designs of Jean-Baptiste Bousquet. There is a museum dedicated to faience in Quimper. Among the town’s eating establishments, crêpes and cider are among the best in Brittany. Additionally, the city has produced copper and bronze work, food items, galvanized ironware, hosiery, leather, paper, and woolen goods.

Population

In the table and graph below, the population data are for Quimper proper, based on its geography at the time. It was in 1959 that the commune of Quimper absorbed the former communes of Ergué-Armel, Kerfunteun, and Penhars. A Quimperois is a person who lives in Quimperois.

Education

There are several schools in Quimper. Two Diwan pre-schools, two Diwan primary schools, and one Diwan collège specialize in Breton. Diwan schools in this area served 287 students in 2003-2004.

Winter Festival

While most French festivals are held during the summer, Quimper hosts its own Winter Festival: Les Hivernautes. During the summer, you can also find pipers and accordion players playing on street corners.

Transport

QUB provides Quimper’s public transportation. The network has seven urban bus routes and 16 suburban bus routes. An additional “beach” bus route is available during the summer months of July and August.

A TGV train line from Paris terminates at the Gare de Quimper, passing through Le Mans, Rennes, and Vannes. Approximately three hours and forty minutes will pass during the journey. Additional destinations the TER Bretagne (regional train network) serves to include those listed below.

Is Quimper worth visiting?

It’s such a pleasure to stroll around old Quimper’s streets! Half-timbered and corbelled houses line the paths, with Saint-Corentin cathedral towering over the alleys. Walking along the Odet will take you through greenery if you hop across the footbridges.

What is Quimper known for?

The pottery produced in Quimper, a commercial town and tourist center, dates back to the 17th century. It is known for its faience and is a significant export of the region. In addition to food processing, the company has developed a research sector devoted to food production technology.

Best Things to Do in Quimper (France)

Quimper Cathedral

During construction in the 13th century, the north side of the nave curved slightly inward to avoid the swampy ground.

Musée des Beaux-Arts

Most works that greet you in Quimper’s Fine Arts Museum belonged to one man, Jean-Marie de Silguy, who donated more than a thousand pieces in 1864 on the condition that the city constructed a museum for them.

Musée de la Faïence

Where pottery has been made since the late 17th century in the Locmaria district, just southwest of Quimper, many people think of “Quimper,” meaning ceramics. It is common to see rustic, naive designs on these plates, jugs, bowls, and vases painted by hand.

Musée Départemental Breton

Located in the former episcopal palace, the Breton Departmental Museum illuminates Quimper and Finistère’s rich heritage and culture.

Odet River

Most visitors to Quimper arrive by car and park just south of the Odet River, then cross it to get into the old quarter. Near the cathedral are many pedestrian crossings, most of which are only for pedestrians.

Old Quimper

The streets and squares even bear the names of their historic trades: Place au Buerre, for butter churners, and Rue Kéréon, for the shoemaking company.

Mont Frugy

A 70-meter hill that rises sharply from the left bank of the Odet River has always been an essential part of the city’s landscape. Due to this hill, Quimper was briefly renamed “Montagne sur Odet” during the Revolution.

Stangala

Following the Odet upriver on the GR 38 footpath is another option after touring Quimper. Just past the city’s northeastern outskirts, you’ll enter one of the region’s most magical landscapes.

Festival de Cornouaille

Every year, Quimper honors its Breton heritage in the appropriately atmospheric surrounds of its medieval quarter for five days in late July. In addition to spontaneous dancing, street entertainment, and musicians, several cultural events are planned.

Manoir du Kinkiz

If you fall in love with Breton cider in Quimper, you should take advantage of the authentic cider press five kilometers away. There are 21 varieties of apples grown in the 30 hectares of orchards at Manoir du Kinkiz.
