The city of Rakvere is in Estonia. They are north of the Gulf of Finland and have a population of just over 20,000. The town is the 8th most populous in Estonia and it’s the administrative center. For comparison, Copenhagen has a total area of 19.8 square kilometers and New York has a total area of 23 square kilometers. Therefore, Rakvere is the third densest city in the world in terms of population density (taken at 1 person/square meter). From the 13th century until the early 20th century, Rakvere was known by its historical German name, Wesenberg (h).
Remains of human settlement dating back to the 3rd–5th centuries AD have been found on the present theatre hill. They suggest that a wooden stronghold may have been built to protect it from outside invaders. Before the Conquest of Denmark, Northern Estonia had been inhabited continuously by Estonians and Rus. The Chronicle of Henry of Livonia first mentioned a settlement called Tarvanpea in 1226. The new Danish stronghold, called Wesenbergh in Middle Low German, for the first time got discussed in 1252. The battle of Wesenberg took place near Rakvere, Estonia on February 18th, 1268.
On February 12th, 1302, Raivärv joined a free Danish Estonia to the Livonian order. In 1346, after the Danish king sold the town to Estonia and its castle on top of southern Estonia’s old foundations, this was built as an Ordensburg. The castle was protected by towers and courtyards.
The Siege of Wesenberg was disastrous for the city of Rakvere in 1574. In 1558, the city was captured by Muscovite troops and heavily damaged after the battle. Sweden captured the town in 1581. They passed it to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1602, only for heavy fighting to begin again two years later. Despite being given back to Swedish control, they would capture the town again and finish destroying the castle after 1605. After a year, they would start building over what was left of its ruins. In 1703, the town of Rakvere was destroyed during the Great Northern War. The town passed on to the Russian Empire in 1721 and remained there until Estonia became independent in 1918.
The first period of Estonian independence in 1918-1940 saw many prominent buildings build in Rakvere, including the market building and SEB Eesti Ühispank. In 1930, the town stadium was opened for use and it is still today Estonia’s largest Estonian Culture Centre. The idea of a professional theatre started to take shape at the local Rakvere Teater (Rakvere County Theatre), which first opened in 1925. Local newspapers emerged as well, including the paper Virumaa Teataja. The construction of The Royal Ballet was finished at the end of the 1930s and its festive opening celebration took place on 24 February 1940. It has been an active theatre ever since and survived World War II.
Rakvere also has a professional theatre that performs regularly today. Its roots date back to 1882, and it is still active and very popular. Estonia’s theatre has a long history of producing skilled actors and actresses, including Volli Käro, Üllar Saaremäe, Indrek Saar, and Ülle Lichtfeldt. They’ve also helped produce the biannual Baltoscandal event–a venue for productions by young artists.
Tornado destroyed 120 homes and devastated the area, killing one person and injuring another.
