Rennes Overview

Brittany’s capital city, Rennes, is located in northwest France. The city is known for its medieval half-timbered houses and magnificent Rennes Cathedral. There is an aviary and rose garden in the Parc du Thabor. Botticelli, Rubens, and Picasso’s works can be seen at the Musée des Beaux-Arts south of the Vilaine river. The Champs Libres cultural center also has a planetarium and the Musée de Bretagne (Brittany Museum).

History of Rennes

The French department of Ille-et-Vilaine has its administrative capital in Rennes. Before the French Revolution, when Brittany was integrated into the Kingdom of France, Rennes was the duchy’s capital, with Nantes and Vannes the other historical means of Brittany’s Ducal period. As a result of its location at the confluence of two rivers and its proximity to the bordering regions, it has had a long history of challenges to its borders.

At the confluence of the Ille and Vilaine rivers, the modern city of Rennes, the Gallic tribe known as the Redones had established their chief township in eastern Brittany, approximately equivalent to the current department of Ille-et-Vilaine in the 2nd century B.C. While the Redones were known for their horsemanship, their name, taken from the Celtic root red cognate with a ride, would eventually be renamed Rennes, which ultimately became the modern city of Rennes. At the time of the Redones, the chief township was known as Condate, a Celtic word for confluence used to simultaneously designate numerous towns in ancient Gaul.

During the 1st century B.C., the Redones adopted the Greek and Roman practices of issuing coinage, adapting the gold staters of Philip II of Macedon in the characteristic Celtic coin metal alloy called billon. The Redones coinage does not include inscriptions, as the Celtic practice was, but instead shows a charioteer on a pony with a human head. Amanlis’ treasure, found in June 1835, and Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande’s treasure, discovered in February 1941, contained large hoards of their coins. There is an extensive collection of representative objects in the museum at Rennes.

Geography

The ancient center of the town is built on a hill, with the north side being higher than the south side. There are two rivers confluent here: the Ille and the Vilaine.

On the European Atlantic Arc, Rennes has located 50 km from the English Channel (near Saint-Malo, Dinard, and Mont Saint-Michel).

A significant Green Belt surrounds the Rennes ring road. Located between the city’s core (relatively dense) and the rest of its urban area (fairly rural), this Green Belt is protected from the elements.

Climate

and oceanic environments characterize Rennes. It is estimated that Rennes receives half as much precipitation as, for example, Quimper, which makes rainfall in Rennes comparable to that in parts of western Germany. Approximately 1,700 to 1,850 sunshine hours are received by Lausanne every year, which is about the amount of sunshine the city gets.

Population

Rennes’ inner city had 221,272 inhabitants in 2018. Rennes’ intercommunal structure (named Rennes Métropole) connected Rennes with 42 nearby suburbs with 450,593 inhabitants, and nearly 750,000 residents lived in the metropolitan area.

Economy

There are several industries in the local economy, including automotive manufacturing, telecommunications, the digital sector, and agriculture.

With 4,800 employees, Orange (ex-France Telecom) is the largest private employer in the country. PSA Peugeot Citroën employs 3,000 people in Rennes’ metropolitan area, making it the second largest private employer. It was in 1961 that PSA opened a manufacturing facility at La Janais in Chartres-de-Bretagne. More than 500 people are employed by Technicolor, one of the world’s giant T.V. and cinema broadcasting companies.

Culture

The city of Rennes is renowned for its festive atmosphere. Many festivals in France are well known, such as the music festival Les Transmusicales, The Tombs of the Night, Mythos, Stunfest (a fighting game competition), and Traveling (a cinema festival). Rock and new wave music were often associated with Rennes during the 1980s.

Local food

Other Breton specialties are at the Marché des Lices, a market held every Saturday morning (one of the largest in France).

Education

There are two central universities in Rennes; the Université de Rennes 1 offers courses in science, technology, medicine, philosophy, law, management, and economics, and the Université Rennes 2 offers classes in human and social sciences, literature, languages, communication, and sport. According to its website, Université Rennes 2 is “the largest institution of higher learning and research in the arts, literature, languages, social sciences, and humanities in the West of France.”

  • Roads – Brittany’s motorway network passes through this city, surrounded by a ring road: the Rocade (national road 136).
  • Railway – The Gare de Rennes, an 1857-built railway station, is a central station on the French rail network.
  • Airport – In the commune Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande, 7 kilometers west of Rennes, the Rennes Brittany Airport serves the city.

Best Things to Do in Rennes (France)

Old Rennes

In 1720, a great fire almost destroyed the city, which accounts for its many late-18th-century houses. Nevertheless, half-timbered dwellings can still be found on the cathedral’s streets.

Parc du Thabor

Located on the city’s highest hill, Parc du Thabor boasts ten hectares of the most beautiful gardens. Picture the rose gardens in summer, where more than 2,000 varieties bloom yearly, and you will be convinced.

Palais du Parlement de Bretagne

Rennes’ importance increased almost overnight after France and Brittany joined forces in 1532, and it became the headquarters of one of the 17 regional governments in France.

Musée des Beaux-Arts

Rennes’ Musée des Beaux-Arts was established after the Revolution with works seized from religious buildings and stately homes.

Écomusée du Pays de Rennes

A preserved historical farm that showcases five centuries of Breton agricultural heritage lies on the city’s southern fringes. All the farmyard animals and arable crops are on the property, including fruit orchards, a kitchen garden, and beehives.

Parc des Gayeulles

Spanning a large segment of northeastern Rennes, Parc de Gayeulles provides easy access to nature without leaving Rennes’ N136 ring road.

Les Champs Libres

Christian Portzamparc designed this innovative cultural center in the heart of Rennes between 1993 and 2006.

Marché des Lices

Rennes has more than its fair share of markets for a mid-sized city, with 20 total. As the third-largest market in the country, this Renne’s institution has been a Renne’s institution since 1622.

Rennes Cathedral

With its sober neoclassical facade, the cathedral isn’t the most beautiful in France, but it has an intriguing story. Since the 500s, it has been home to the city’s cathedral. However, the 1100s version collapsed in stages between 1490 and 1754, when almost everything was torn down and rebuilt.

Opéra de Rennes

Standing alongside Rennes’ equally striking 18th-century baroque city hall, the opera hall is a stunning sight on Place de la Mairie.
