Roubaix Overview

Roubaix is a city in northern France, located near the Belgian border in the Lille metropolitan area. In the 19th century, its textile industries helped the commune overgrow, with many of the same characteristics as boom towns in England and the United States. Its significant initiatives declined by the middle of the 1970s, causing the city to face many economic and social challenges associated with deindustrialization. In the French region of Hauts-de-France, Roubaix is located northeast of Lille, adjacent to Tourcoing. It is the chef-lieu of two cantons and the third-largest city by population.

Location

Roubaix is central on the northeast slope of the Métropole Européenne de Lille. It is located between Lille and Tourcoing and is close to the Belgian border. Seven cities constitute Roubaix’s immediate neighboring environment as far as town boundaries are concerned. To the north and northwest is Tourcoing, to the northeast is Wattrelos, to the east is Leers, to the southeast is Lys-lez-Lannoy, to the south is Hem, and to the southwest and west is Croix. Along with these municipalities, Roubaix is part of Ferrain, a little district of the former Castellany of Lille between the Lys and Scheldt rivers.

Geology

Roubaix is located on the plains of Flanders. An east-west oriented shallow syncline axis traverses the Roubaisian area, which trends south-southeast to the Paleozoic limestone of the Mélantois-Tournaisis faulted anticline. Predominantly, alluvial sediments were deposited during the Holocene. It covers 13.23 square kilometers (5.11 square miles) and has an elevation drop of only 35 meters (114 feet 10 inches). In this area, 17 meters (55 feet 9 inches and 12 inches) above sea level is the lowest altitude, while 52 meters (170 feet 7 inches) is the highest.

Hydrology

Before industrialization began to alter the Roubaix rural landscape in the middle of the 19th century, the Trichon stream fed by the Espierre stream flowed through the rural landscape. During that century, the following industries, with their increasing demands for reliable supplies of goods and water, led to construction of an inland waterway connecting Roubaix to Lille directly, upstream from the Deûle, downstream from the Marque and Espierre toward the Scheldt.

Climate

There are no unusual weather events in the city. As a result of Roubaix’s geographical location and the weather station of Lille-Lesquin of Météo-France, the town has a temperate oceanic climate: summers are mild, but winters are cold. There is rarely intense precipitation.

Geography

Vienna is located in northeastern Austria, at the easternmost extension of the Alps in the Vienna Basin. The earliest settlement, at the location of today’s inner city, was south of the meandering Danube while the city now spans both sides of that river and is made up mainly by a series of long ring-roads. Elevations in Vienna range from a high of 542 meters to a low of just 151 meters. The city spans 415 square kilometers, making it Austria’s largest city.

Toponymy

is most likely derived from the Frankish words rasa and baki, “reed,” and “brook.” As a result, Roubaix’s meaning can be traced back to the three historical brooks of the city: Espierre, Trichon, and Favreuil. The place was first mentioned in a Latinized form in the 9th century as Villa Rusbaci. In subsequent years, these names were used: 1047 and 1106 Rubais, 1122 Rosbays, 1166 Rusbais, 1156 and 1202 Robais, and 1223 Roubais.

According to Mercator’s 1540 map of Flanders, the name evolved into Roubaix over centuries.

Languages

Roubaix has been ruled by Flanders’ rulers throughout its history, but Roubaisians have used a Picard variant as their everyday language since the Middle Ages. Known locally as Roubaignot, this dialect is spoken by the locals.

Sport

Roubaix’s velodrome hosts one of the world’s oldest professional road cycling races: Paris–Roubaix, the Hell of the North. Roubaix is famous for its velodrome, but this city has other attractions.

In addition to the development of local sporting clubs and associations, the building of indoor and outdoor sports facilities in the city should be attributed to its era of economic expansion during the industrial revolution.

World Track Cycling Championships will be held in Roubaix in October 2021.

Economy

Roubaix gained an international reputation for its textile industry and wool production during the 19th century. During the 1970s and 1980s, global competition and automation contributed to an industrial decline leading to the closure of many factories. Approximately three-fourths of the town’s territory has been assigned specific zoning designations and health and welfare plans since the French urban policy was implemented in the early 1980s.

Because of the deindustrialization of Roubaix, unemployment is high there, and the town is listed as one of the poorest in France. Deindustrialization has been addressed by successive local governments by attracting new industries, utilizing the town’s cultural assets, and ensuring a solid student presence on campuses. Despite decades of decline, the city is experimenting with new models and taking advantage of successful economic stories with online retail and information technology. It appears to be on its way to recovery.

Transportation

The A22 autoroute, the French part of the European route E17 from Burgundy to Antwerp, is Roubaix’s only motorway within France’s highest-density motorway network.

There are connections to Antwerp, Lille, Ostend, Paris, and Tourcoing from the Gare de Roubaix railway station.

Lille Metro serves the city as well.

What is Roubaix famous for?

There is still only so many excellent Roubaix event, as the cycling race Paris-Roubaix is held every March or April. At each edition, the race is completed in the velodrome in the city after a 250-kilometer trial. One of the world’s most famous cycling races, it was founded in 1896.

Is Roubaix worth visiting?

Open-air galleries can be found on the walls of industrial buildings and the town’s narrow alleyways. On the first Sunday of every month, two brilliant, innovative art studios are open to the public Roubaix – and they’re well worth a visit.

Best Things to Do in Roubaix (France)

La Piscine Museum

The venue is a 1930s swimming pool converted into a museum: the pool chamber, its galleries, tiled walls, and stained glass windows form the main exhibition hall, while a former textile factory provides additional exhibit space.

La Manufacture

When you’re in Roubaix, it’s only appropriate to pull on the thread of cloth-making. La Manufacture, a museum in the former Craye factory, preserves the city’s textile heritage. A hall filled with machines from different eras greets you as you enter the gigantic 19th-century building.

Villa Cavroix

You can see where textile wealth was spent in this stunning modernist house in Croix. The illustrious Robert Mallet-Stevens designed Villa Cavroix for textile industrialist Paul Cavrois.

Parc Barbieux

Roubaix’s central park lies just south of the center, and it has an interesting origin story: Its water channel is an aborted attempt to connect Roubaix’s center with the Marque River.

Église Saint-Martin

A church has stood on this site for around a thousand years, and although the Romanesque structure is no longer there, the nave contains 1400s-era columns.

City Hall

The Hôtel de Ville in Roubaix was an important landmark when the city was at its height. In 1903, Victor Laloux was commissioned to design the Gare d’Orsay (now the Musée) in Paris. An ode to the textile industry was created by him and the sculptor Alphonse-Amédée Cordonnier in the Neo-Renaissance style.

Paris-Roubaix

The legendary Paris-Roubaix cycle race finishes at Roubaix Velodrome. As much of the course is on rough country tracks and cobblestones, winning the Paris-Roubaix is a significant accomplishment for pro-riders.

McArthurGlen Roubaix

Located a few minutes south of the city center, this large designer outlet is an integral part of the city’s redevelopment program. There are 75 stores at the mall, including Calvin Klein, Guess, Lacoste, and Desigual, which attract shoppers from Lille and across the border in Belgium.

Usine Motte-Bossut

This old cotton mill rivals none of Roubaix’s other industrial behemoths for its whimsy and grandeur. An entrance similar to a gatehouse and a chimney stack identical to a turret describes Usine Motte-Bossut as a giant castle.

Verlaine Message Museum

At the former headquarters of the 15th German Army in Tourcoing, under 10 minutes from Roubaix, is a museum housed in a vast Nazi bunker. Radio Londres was the French Resistance station broadcasting from London during the war.
