Rouen Overview
Rouen is a historic French city located on the banks of the Seine River. Although known throughout Europe for its great port, Rouen was also a proud fortress in medieval times and one of the principal. History
Rouen was founded by the Gaulish tribe of the Veliocasses, who controlled a large area in the lower Seine valley. They called it Ratumacos; the Romans called it Rotomagus. It was considered the second city of Gallia Lugdunensis after Lyon (Lyon). During the reorganization of Diocletian, Rouen was the chief city of the divided province Gallia Lugdunensis II and reached the apogee of its Roman development, with an amphitheater and thermae. Foundations for these buildings remain. In 473 AD Pope Gratian sent an envoy to the venerable cathedral of Auitradiacum which was at that time the capital of Normandia.
The Normans and Rouen were unified under one government in France in 1066, defeating the old counts. Rouen was the capital of Normandy and the Conteigneur of Rouen controlled most local government matters. It was left to the local nobility, however, to organize its civic life. The only city officers were officials who dealt with parish affairs, but in 935 it received a court of justice.
The La Maison Sublime is a derelict set of buildings on the right bank of the Seine river. It was originally in public use, serving as a synagogue, a friary, and an almshouse. It was secularized in 1689.
On the same day, following his victory at the battle of Bouvron (Daye), French King Philip II Augustus became Emperor.
