Ruzomberok Overview

In Liptov’s historical region, Ruomberok is a town in northern Slovakia. The city has a population of around 27,000 people.

Etymology

This street is named after the original settlement called Revúca (Slovak “roaring,” derived from the Revúca river). Rosenberg is named after wild roses that grow in the area, and German colonists build a new settlement in its neighborhood. After the Slovaks adopted this name, it became known as Ružomberok.

Geography

Located in the westernmost portion of the Sub-Tatra Basin, specifically its subdivision Liptov Basin, it is surrounded by Choské Vrchy, Greater Fatra, and Low Tatras mountain ranges. On the way to Banská Bystrica, in the east, is Váh, a left tributary that flows into Likavka brook, in the north, on the way to Dolný Kubín. It is about 65 kilometers from Ilina, 190 kilometers from Koice, and 260 kilometers from Bratislava. Apart from the main settlement, Biely Potok, Ernová, Hrboltová, and Vlkolnicke are also part of the city.

Climate

Summers are hot, and winters are freezing. Spring is wet and moderately warm, summer is hot and very wet, autumn is dry, and winter is freezing. As part of the Greater Fatra and Choské vrchy mountain range, Ruomberok is in a rain shadow. The total amount of precipitation per year is 727 millimeters. There are 68 days on average with snow cover every year, and 92 cm of snow cover at the highest point ever recorded. A high temperature of 37°C (99°F) was recorded in 2007, and a low temperature of 38°C (36°F) was recorded in 1949 and 1986.

History

King Andrew II of Hungary granted land Revúca (terra Reuche) to his servant Hudko (Hudkonth, in the deed of confirmation Hudko). Miloslav (Mylozou), Hudko’s son, and their descendants farmed the land where the Slovak village Revúca had been founded in the 13th century. Located near the older town, Rosenberg (possession Rozumberg) was established by Germans in the 1320s. It was in 1329 that Revica became part of Ruomberok, becoming known as Podhora (Sub Monte).

As of 1340, Charles I of Hungary confirmed the town rights: burgesses and guests (German colonists) had the same rights as in Ľupča (now Partizánska Ľupča). There is some uncertainty about the extent of previous requests. According to the charter preserved only in copy, Ruomberok has enjoyed these rights since 1318. After the Hussites forced many wealthy families out of the town in 1431, the Germans had a dominant position. During the 15th century, the city of Slovakia was under the control of the Slovak town council.

The town played a significant role in the Slovak national movement in the 19th century. With the completion of the Kassa Oderberg Railway in 1871, many new factories appeared, including paper and pulpwood works as well as brickworks and textile factories.

The Ernová tragedy occurred in 1907 in an area more commonly referred to as a street than a part of the town.

When Austria-Hungary broke up in 1918, Ružomberok became a part of Czechoslovakia. Nevertheless, after Czechoslovakia broke up in 1939, it was incorporated into the First Slovak Republic and became the capital of Tatra County (Tatranská župa). A part of the Soviet 4th Ukrainian Front, the I Czechoslovak Army Corps captured Ruomberok on 5 April 1945. The town became a part of Czechoslovakia again before becoming part of Slovakia after Czechoslovakia disintegrated in 1993. The district town of Ruzomberok was formed in 1995.

Demographics

according to the census, 30,417 people lived in the town in 2001. Most of the population is Slovak, while a small minority is Roma and a small minority is Czech. There were 75.47% Roman Catholics, 14.65% without a religious affiliation, and 5.46% Lutherans.

Industry and commerce

Ružomberok was known as an industrial town during the 20th century. One of the city’s biggest challenges is dealing with pollution caused by the resulting industrial activity. It was home to the largest cotton mill in Slovakia – BZVIL or Texicom – and still houses one of the largest exporters in Slovakia – Mondi SCP, formerly known as SCP – Severoslovenske celulozky a paper. In 2006, Texicom filed for bankruptcy. This paper and pulp factory is the biggest employer in the Liptov region and Ruzomberok district. In the south of the town, there is also a brick factory.

Ružomberok is nowadays considered a good shopping town, with most supermarket brands available. Billa, Tesco, Lidl, Kaufland, Jednota, Hypernova, Verex, and Kinekus are a few of them. It is also planned to open an Aupark and an Aldi.

Schools

The town has numerous primary and secondary schools, two grammar schools, and two universities. The Catholic University and the University of Ilina have branches in the city. There is no longer an option to study at the University of Ilina’s detached workplace as of September 2007.

Sport

MBK Ruomberok is the most successful Slovak basketball team in history, with two EuroLeague Women’s titles. Ružomberok also has a successful football team, MFK Ružomberok, which plays in the top division of the Slovak League, the Slovak Superliga. The team won the Gorgon Liga and the Slovak FA Cup in 2006.
