Saint-Denis Overview

The commune of Saint-Denis lies in the northern suburbs of Paris, France. In terms of distance from the center of Paris, it is 9.4 kilometers (5.8 miles). With a population of 113,116 at the 2020 census, Saint-Denis is Paris’s second most populated suburb after Boulogne-Billancourt. As the seat of the arrondissement of Saint-Denis, it is a subprefecture (French: sous-préfecture) of the department of Seine-Saint-Denis. It is also located here as part of the Métropole du Grand Paris.

The Basilica of Saint-Denis has a royal necropolis and an abbey. Moreover, the Stade de France, built for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, is France’s national football and rugby stadium. Saint-Denis was formerly an industrial suburb now experiencing a change in its economic base. The inhabitants of Saint-Denis are known as Dionysian.

Name

Before the 3rd century, Saint-Denis was probably called Catolacus or Catulliacum after a Gallo-Roman landowner named Catullus. Saint-Denis, the first bishop of Paris, died on the Montmartre hill and was buried in Catolacus around 250 AD. Saint-Denis was renamed Saint-Denis after his grave was turned into a shrine and a pilgrimage center shortly after 250 AD.

As a gesture of rejection of religion, Saint-Denis was renamed Franciade during the French Revolution in 1793. In 1803, however, the city reverted to its former name, Saint-Denis, under the Consulate of Napoléon Bonaparte.

History

The French royal family has been closely associated with Saint-Denis. Almost every French king was buried in the Basilica, beginning with Dagobert I (c. 603–639).

However, Saint-Denis dates back much further than that. On the site where Saint-Denis is located today, there was a Gallo-Roman village called Catolacus in the 2nd century. Denis, the first bishop of Me saint of France, was martyred and buried in the cemetery of Catolacus in about 250 AD. The tomb of Denis quickly became a place of worship. Denis’ tomb became a popular pilgrimage destination around 475 AD when Sainte Geneviève built a small chapel. The chapel was rebuilt and turned into a royal monastery by Dagobert I. He granted many privileges to the monastery, including independence from Paris’ bishop, the right to hold markets, and, most importantly, the right to be buried in Saint-Denis. Due to Dagobert’s privileges, Saint-Denis became a significant city during the Middle Ages. Traders from Europe (and even the Byzantine Empire) visited its market.

During the reign of King Suger in 1140, Abbot Suger granted other privileges to the citizens of Saint-Denis. In addition to enlarging the Basilica of Saint-Denis, he started building the first example of high early Gothic architecture. 1144 was the year of the consecration of the new church.

As a result of the Hundred Years’ War, Saint-Denis was depopulated; only 3,000 people remained after the conflict.

The Battle of Saint-Denis was fought between Protestants and Catholics during the French Wars of Religion. It was a defeat for the Protestants, but the Catholic commanders killed Anne de Montmorency. Henry IV surrendered the city to the abbey of Saint-Denis in 1590 when he converted to Catholicism.

Saint-Denis was home to several industries started by King Louis XIV (1638–1715): weavers, spinners, and dyehouses. Following him, Louis XV (1710-1774), whose daughter was a nun in the Carmelite convent, renovated the royal abbey and added a chapel to the convent.

In addition to being renamed “Franciade” from 1793 to 1803, the royal necropolis was looted and destroyed during the French Revolution. In the French Restoration, since the remains could no longer be sorted out, they were reburied in a common ossuary since they could no longer be removed from the tombs.

Transport

Metro, RER, tram, and Translien provide connections to Saint-Denis. Saint-Denis’ rail station, built in 1846, was formerly the only one in the town but now serves as an interchange station for Transilien Paris – Nord (Line H) suburban rail line and RER line D. It is also the home of SNCF, the French railway company.

Education

The city of Saint-Denis has 29 public preschools and nurseries (écoles maternelles). Saint-Denis has 30 public elementary schools (écoles élémentaires), one of which is an intercommunal school (École Élémentaire Maria Casarès). There are eight public junior high schools (collèges) in Saint-Denis. Senior high schools/sixth-form colleges in Saint-Denis include Lycée Bartholdi, Lycée Paul Éluard, Lycée Suger, and Lycée d’application de l’E.N.N.A.

Saint-Denis has one private elementary, middle, and high school (Ensemble Scolaire Jean-Baptiste de la Salle-Notre Dame de la Compassion) and one private middle and high school (Collège et lycée Saint-Vincent-DePaul).

Population

111,103 (2015)

Climate

Saint-Denis is characterized by short, warm, partly cloudy summers and long, cold, windy, mostly cloudy winters. The average temperature varies from 35°F to 78°F throughout the year, rarely falling below 24°F or rising above 88°F. In Saint-Denis, warm-weather activities are best enjoyed between mid-June and mid-September.

What is Saint-Denis, France, known for?

As well as the royal necropolis of the Basilica of Saint-Denis, Saint-Denis was also home to an abbey. Moreover, the Stade de France, built for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, is France’s national football and rugby stadium.

Is Saint-Denis worth visiting?

For history lovers, the Basilica of Saint-Denis is a must-see. Additionally, it compensates for Notre Dame, which is no longer accessible due to restoration work. As the Basilica is a bit far from the center of Paris, we recommend this visit to people spending a long period in Paris.
