Saint-Germain-en-Laye Overview

In the north-central French region of the Île-de-France, Saint-Germain-en-Laye is a commune in the Yvelines department. Paris’s western suburbs are 19.1 km (11.9 mi) from the city center.

Residents are called Saint-Germanois or Saint-Germinois. It combines high-end leisure spots and exclusive residential neighborhoods (see the Golden Triangle of the Yvelines) along its elegant tree-lined streets.

The sub-prefecture of Saint-Germain-en-Laye is part of the department. It is the largest commune in the Yvelines because it includes the National Forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. A large loop of the Seine is occupied by it. An RER station on Line A of the RER is located in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

History

Upon the site of the present Church of Saint-Germain, King Robert the Pious (ruled 996–1031) founded Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1020.

As a result of what is known as the Glorious Revolution, James II of England was exiled to this city in 1688. On 16 September 1701, he passed away after spending most of his life there.

The Château de Saint-Germain had been the residence of several French monarchs before the French Revolution in 1789. During the time of Saint Louis in 1238, the old castle (château-fort) was built on the foundations of a castle by King Charles V in 1348. Its subsequent restoration was the responsibility of Francis I. This first royal château was the site of Napoleon III’s establishment of the Musée des Antiquités Nationales in 1862. You will find exhibits at this museum from the Paleolithic to the Celtic period. Museum’s most famous exhibit is a mammoth ivory tusk sculptured around 23,000 years ago called “Dame de Brassempouy.”

It bears the mark of King Henry IV and King Louis XIII. As a result, Saint-Germain-en-Laye’s coat of arms shows a cradle and the date of Louis XIV’s birth. He stayed in the château from 1661 to 1681. After the Glorious Revolution in 1688, Louis XIV exiled himself from Britain and gave the château to James VII & II of Scotland and England. It was here in 1692 that James’ daughter Louisa Maria Stuart was born in exile after living at the Château for 13 years. The parish church is where James II is buried.

The famous stone terrace of Saint-Germain-en-Laye is 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) long, built between 1669 and 1673 by André Le Nôtre. Views of the Seine valley and Paris are available from the terrace. Many places whose names had religious or royal connotations were renamed during the French Revolution. During this time, Saint-Germain-en-Laye was known as Montagne-du-Bon-Air. In the Château-Vieux, Napoleon I established a training school for cavalry officers.

During WWII, one of the German bunkers was built.

In 1919, the Treaty of Saint-Germain was signed and came into effect on 16 July 1920. It recognized the independence of Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, and the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (Yugoslavia) after the breakup of the Habsburg empire.

German Army headquarters occupied the town from 1940 to 1944.

The former commune of Fourqueux was merged into Saint-Germain-en-Laye on 1 January 2019.

Saint-Germain parish church

The parish church was rebuilt in the 1820s in a Neoclassical style after it was initially built in the 11th century, and it is dedicated to Saint Germain of Paris. In 1855, Queen Victoria visited the church’s mausoleum of James II of England.
