Saint-Malo Overview

This historic French port is on the English Channel coast in Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany.

Piracy had a long history in the walled city, earning wealth through extortion and overseas adventures. The Allies heavily bombed Saint-Malo in 1944. As a result, the town became a popular tourist destination, with ferry terminals serving the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey and the Southern English settlements of Portsmouth, Hampshire, and Poole, Dorset.

Every four years in November, Saint-Malo and Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe host the famous transatlantic single-handed yacht race Route du Rhum.

Population

During the summer tourist season, this number can reach 300,000, although it was 46,097 in 2017. In 2017, the metropolitan area’s population was approximately 133,000, including the suburbs.

A merger of three communes in 1962 resulted in the population of Saint-Malo more than doubled in 1967: Saint-Servan (14,963 residents) and Paramé (8,811 residents in 1962).

History

Ancient Saint-Malo was known as the Roman Reginca or Aletum, a town founded by Gauls in the 1st century B.C. By the late 4th century AD, Saxon Shore promontory forts protected the Rance estuary from seaborne raiders from beyond the frontiers in the Saint-Servan district. A dux (commander) of the Tractus Armoricanus and Nervicanus section of the litus Saxonicum garrisoned the fort according to the Notitia Dignitatum. In the 5th and 6th centuries, Armorica (modern-day Brittany) received many Celtic Britons fleeing instability across the Channel during the decline of the Western Roman Empire. Saint Aaron and Saint Brendan founded a monastic settlement called Saint-Malo early in the sixth century. St. Malo or Maclou, a Welsh immigrant who was said to be a follower of Brendan the Navigator, gave the city its name.

In Marie de France’s poem “Laüstic,” a 12th-century love story, Saint-Malo is the setting. Historically, the city asserted its autonomy when dealing with French and Breton authorities. As an independent republic, Saint-Malo declared itself independent between 1590 and 1593, taking the motto “not French, not Breton, but Malouin.”

As a result, Saint-Malo became notorious as the home of corsairs, French privateers, vateers, and pirates. In the 19th century, this “piratical” notoriety was portrayed in Jean Richepin’s play Le filibuster and César Cui’s eponymous opera. The corsairs of Saint-Malo not only forced English ships to pass up the Channel to pay tribute and brought wealth from afield. Jacques Cartier lived in and sailed from Saint-Malo to the Saint Lawrence River, visiting the villages of Stadacona and Hochelaga that would later become present-day Quebec City and Montreal sites, respectively. As a result, Saint-Malo became notorious as the home of pirates, French privateers, and “Kanata” (meaning a group of houses). Cartier is credited as the discoverer of Canada.

Climate

An oceanic temperate climate prevails in Saint-Malo Bay. With an average temperature of 11.6°C, the Gulf Stream softens the temperature range between winter and summer (from 6.1°C in January to 17.8°C in August).

Politics

Gilles Lurton, a Republican Member of Parliament, represents Saint-Malo in the National Assembly as part of Ille-et-Vilaine’s 7th constituency.

Transport

A ferry terminal is located in Saint-Malo, and Brittany Ferries and Condor Ferries operate daily services to Portsmouth and Poole via the Channel Islands. A railway station, Gare de Saint-Malo, also offers direct TGV service to Rennes, Paris, and several regional destinations, and Keolis provides bus services. Dinard-Pleurtuit-Saint-Malo Airport is located around 5 kilometers (3 miles) to the south of the town.

Is St Malo, France, worth visiting?

Piracy, war, and tourism have all played a part in the history of this walled city, which has a ferry that services the English Channel islands. Saint-Malo is a great place to visit for a day, but I recommend exploring this city properly for a few days. In Saint-Malo, you will find so much beauty!

What is Saint-Malo famous for?

The most famous thing about Saint Malo is that many privateers (state-sponsored pirates) based themselves there during the middle ages. Its historic buildings, scenic sea views, and easy access to the rest of France have made the walled city a popular holiday destination in recent years.

Best Things to Do in Saint-Malo (France)

Saint-Malo Walls

These ramparts encircle the old town of Saint-Malo and cover a distance of 1.75 kilometers. Beginning in the 1100s, they were updated in the 1600s to combat new military technology, and then again in the mid-18th century.

Old Saint-Malo

The houses in Saint-Malo are made of gray granite, giving them a distinguished, sometimes harsh air. There are many bars, restaurants, upmarket shops, and creperies in the “Intra-Muros” district, where exploring is the game’s name.

Plage du Sillon

A three-kilometer stretch of fine sand just north of the walled city, Plage du Sillon is one of those dynamic beaches constantly in flux. More than a kilometer and a half long embankment stretches along the edge, built at the turn of the 20th century.

Château de Saint-Malo

Built by the Dukes of Brittany in the 1400s to ensure their ownership of the city, now Saint-Malo’s city hall is located on the northeast corner of the walls. In the 16th century, after the unification of France, the castle loomed over the city as a reminder of the authority of the dukes and then the King of France.

Grand Aquarium Saint-Malo

Located just outside the walled city is Saint-Malo’s aquarium, a high-profile attraction updated almost every season. The 360° shark aquarium, which held 600,000 liters and was added in 2011, is a must-see among the animals.

Paramé

Northeast of the walled city, near the Plage du Sillon, this district overgrew in the late 19th century, becoming home to many stunning belle époque villas. A sense of whimsy was given free rein by wealthy holidaymakers when building these structures.

Fort National

Located at the western end of Plage du Sillon, Vauban, a French engineer, designed this forward bastion. Saint-Malo’s defensive puzzle was completed with this star-shaped tower, intended to defend the city from the British navy.

Grand Bé

Another islet a few strides from the ramparts must also be reached at low tide. It took weeks before the Americans surrendered the Alet peninsula at the mouth of the Rance River after liberating Saint-Malo.

GR-34

The Sentier des Douaniers (Customs Officers’ Trail) is precisely what it sounds like a coastal footpath designed in the 1700s to foil smugglers. From Saint-Malo, you could walk to Brest in Finistère if you wanted.

Parc de la Briantais

The sumptuous English park that once surrounded the Château de la Briantais is on high ground by the Rance Estuary. An eerie but handsome ruin of the baroque mansion built here in 1666 by wealthy shipowners remains in the park.
