Saint-Nazaire Overview
It is part of the Loire-Atlantique department in western France, in the traditional Brittany region.
The town has a significant harbor on the right bank of the Loire estuary, near the Atlantic Ocean. La Brière, the second-largest swamp in France, lies south of the town. Saint-Nazaire has a long tradition of fishing and shipbuilding due to its location. The Chantiers de l’Atlantique built S.S. Normandie, SS France, RMS Queen Mary 2, and the cruise ship M.S. Symphony of the Seas, the world’s largest passenger ship until 2022, one of the largest shipyards in the world.
Until the Industrial Revolution, Saint-Nazaire was a small village, but it became a large city in the second half of the 19th century due to the construction of railways and the seaport’s growth. Saint-Nazaire gradually replaced Nantes upstream as the primary haven on the Loire Estuary.
During World War II, Saint-Nazaire was subject to a successful British raid in 1942 and heavy bombing by the Allies until 1945. Saint-Nazaire was liberated from German occupation on 11 May 1945 as one of the Atlantic pockets. As a result of the Second World War, the town suffered some of the most damage.
History
According to the Greek navigator Pytheas, Saint-Nazaire was the second-largest Gaulish city after Massilia (now Marseille), built on the remains of Corbilo, an Armorican Gaulish city populated by the Namnetes tribe. According to archeology, the area has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, based on monuments such as the tumulus of Dissignac, the dolmen in the city center, and ancient bronzes discovered nearby.
Brutus of Troy, the mythical ancestor of the Bretons, traveled to Saint-Nazaire to set foot on the new homeland of his people, according to the 15th-century chronicler Alain Bouchart. Britons colonized the Loire estuary and later the peninsula containing Guérande at the end of the Roman Empire. Near Saint-Nazaire, east of Donges, is the most remote Breton-speaking area in the Loire.
The Roman Church sheltered the remains of the martyr Nazarius in a local basilica, according to Gregory of Tours. According to legend, an emissary of the Breton chief Waroch II was sent to seize these relics. The emissary foiled the plot by breaking his skull upon the lintel of the church door. Sanctus Nazarius de Sinuario became the village’s name after Waroch interpreted it as a miracle.
Saint-Nazaire’s history needs to be better documented from this point on, as it is for much of Europe during the Dark Ages. During the Hundred Years’ War, Jehan d’Ust defended the city on behalf of John V, Duke of Brittany (known in France as Jean IV) against the Castilian fleet in 1380. The parish of Saint-Nazaire, part of the Viscountcy of Saint-Nazaire, was created after this time.
In 1532, Saint-Nazaire was annexed by France, along with the rest of Brittany. On the order of the governor of Brittany, a fort was built in 1756 to protect the town, which by then had 600 residents. Brittany was the province of Saint-Nazaire until the French Revolution.
Geography
Saint-Nazaire is located on the north bank of the Loire estuary, 50 kilometers west of Nantes (its territory includes the tip of Chémoulin, which marks the end of the estuary). Nearby are the marshes of Brière, the second largest wetland in France after the Camargue and home to various animal and plant species.
Saint-Nazaire is the commune center of an urban unit (commonly called an aggregation) that includes 17 communes of the Loire estuary and had 186,760 inhabitants in 2018. With 213,675 inhabitants in 2018, this unit is the center of the Saint-Nazaire urban area (24 communes). Between the Brière and the Loire estuary, the eastern part of the town is surrounded by alluvial terrain. In the western region, a granite and metamorphic base corresponds to the hillside of Guérande: the relief is hilly and of a higher altitude. Saint-Nazaire lies within the Armorican massif geologically.
Climate
Saint-Nazaire, as does the rest of the area, has a temperate oceanic climate as part of the Loire-Atlantique region. The Loire estuary has a great deal of influence on this climate. In winter, temperatures rarely drop below three °C, and in summer, they rarely rise above 24°C. It rarely snows, but rains are frequent (113 days a year with precipitation) but not very intense, with an annual rainfall of 743.3 millimeters. There is, however, a relatively large variation in precipitation from one year to the next. Sunlight is 1,826 hours a year, but strong sunshine is only present 53 days a year.
Saint-Nazaire receives mainly southwesterly winds caused by Atlantic depressions and northeasterly winds when the weather is more stable. There are 60 days per year with strong winds and an average annual wind speed of 4.5 meters per second.

Transport
Through the Pont de Saint-Nazaire, which crosses the Loire, the Route Nationale N165/N161 (E60 route) connects Saint-Nazaire to Nantes and Renne’s. The A10/A11 in Nantes is then used to reach Paris. The N165 provides access to Valves, Lorient, Quimper, and Brest.
The construction and operation of a second Loire crossing between Nantes and Saint Nazaire are considered a potential project.
Railway
In addition to the TGV, regional trains and buses of the TER Pays de la Loire serve the Saint-Nazaire railway station. Trains to Paris with the LGV Atlantique take just 2 hours, with connections to Lyon, Marseille, Lille, and Strasbourg via TGV (high-speed trains).
