Salon-de-Provence Overview
It is located in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Southern France, about 52 km (32 mi) northwest of Marseille. A vital air base of the French Air and Space Force (Armée de l’Air et de l’Espace) is located there. Forty-five thousand five hundred twenty-eight people were living there in 2017.
History
Due to its location on the salt trade routes between the Adriatic, Atlantic, and Mediterranean seas, Salon was a Gallo-Roman oppidum. Phocaean influence can still be seen outside the town, and stretches of the Via Aurelia can still be seen on the outskirts. However, the Place was first named Villa Salone in the ninth century. The site was under the control of the archbishops of Arles.
Among its most outstanding claims to fame is that Nostradamus spent most of his final years there and was buried there. The city celebrates its history during Nostradamus for four days every June or July by maintaining its home as a museum.
The historic center is still enclosed within its walled circuit, which is entered through two seventeenth-century gateways, Porte de l’Horloge, and Port Bourg Neuf.
In 1559, Adam de Craponne built the Canal de Craponne to bring fresh water from the river Durance to the city and the surrounding plains. As a result of inexpensive freight, Salon prospered.
Culture
Festivals of chamber music are held at the Château de l’Empéri each summer.
In some years, the Château plays host to Nostradamiques – a historical reenactment of Nostradamus’ era that includes processions and a transformation of the old medieval downtown. The television presenter Jean-Pierre Foucault performed an example of such a reenactment. At the reenactment’s closing ceremony in 2006, Robert Hossein conducted the ceremony.
