Is Sete France worth visiting?

Sete is a unique city with its character that is worth visiting despite not being one of the most popular destinations in the South of France.

What is Sete known for?

Sète, also known as the Singular Island, is a popular tourist destination in Occitanie thanks to its canals and desirable location between the Etang de Thau and the Mediterranean Sea. The tranquil oasis of Sète, also known as “Venice of Languedoc,” is an enchanting port resort.

Best Things to Do in Sète (France)

Sète Old Port

The city’s streets, canals, bridges, and gridded streets are unlike anything else in France. Spend an afternoon strolling along the quays, stopping now and then to admire the painted houses and historic warehouses and enjoying lunch by the water.

Musée Paul Valéry

An early-20th-century poet and philosopher born in Sète, this museum is situated on a terrace near Mont Saint-Clair. An in-depth history of the city and antique shields and lances are displayed in the galleries featuring everything from fine art to the famous jousts of 1666.

Cimetière Marin

After exploring the museum named after him, you can visit Paul Valéry’s tomb in the same place he eulogized in the poem “Le Cimetière Marin.” Resting on a cliff top over the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean, the Maritime Cemetery is in a unique position that makes it an unforgettable sight.

Water Jousting

One of the highlights of this festival is the water jousting, which takes place in the Canal Royal and involves two big guys facing off on platforms attached to crewed rowboats, using lances and wooden shields to knock one another over.

Espace Georges Brassens

Another Sète son who became a beloved cultural figure was poet and songwriter Georges Brassens, whose career spanned the postwar years until he died in 1981. With the aid of a headset guide, an exhibition devoted to his life and career commemorates things as intangible as songs.

Musée International des Arts Modestes (MIAM)

Situated in an old canal-side warehouse, the MIAM is dedicated to “Art Modeste.” Outsider art, or nave art, celebrates even the most mundane artificial objects and gives them a soul by putting them in a different context.

Théâtre de la mer

Built to defend Sète against regular attacks by foreign navies, Fort Saint-Pierre was constructed near the harbor entrance in the 1740s. Before being converted into an extraordinary performance venue in the late 1950s, the fortress served as a military base until the end of the Second World War.

Mont Saint-Clair

Sète’s hill has almost steep slopes in some places, but that only enhances the panoramic views from the 175-meter summit.

Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette

If you want something to divert your attention, check out this quaint chapel that fishermen used to visit before sailing.

Saint-Louis Lighthouse

The best part of seeing this landmark is getting there: the lighthouse is located near the tip of the western harbor wall, the Môle Saint-Louis. Its 650-meter length offers a great view of the marina, its forest of masts, and Mont Saint-Clair.
