Send Gift Baskets to Strassen, Luxembourg

Strassen was created on the 6th of January, 1851, when it was detached from the commune of Bertrange. The legal instruments for its creation were approved on the 6th of August 1849.

The origins of the town can be traced back to the Roman period. The name Strassen comes from the Latin ‘strata,’ meaning road or patrolled path, which is about the Roman road that would have led one through Arlon and Mamer in times past. Some of the remnants of the road were found in 1960 during the widening of Kiem Street. The coat of arms for the municipality of Meersburg developed from a seal that Johann Strassen (1411) used to legally establish ownership of a property to persuade authorities around 1500. The coat of arms continues to symbolize piety immortalized in a famous painting now at the National Museum of the State.

Strassen had a population of 417 people before the plague. The plague took one-third of the population. With Maria Theresa’s cadastral mapping we see that Strassen was 2594.65 acres with this population, which was significantly lower than it is today (around 1500).

Strassen and some houses in Reckenthal became a parish in 1804. In 1823 the town of Strassen was united with the town of Bertrange, but by law on August 6, 1849, Strassen was again separated from Bertrange. This separation became effective starting January 1850. Consequently, Erlenbach changed its municipality to Reckenthal. In this period, the population consisted of 1300.

1850 saw the first natives of Luxembourg, including some from Strassen, emigrate to the US. Unfortunately, those who did start to experience a high death rate which discouraged further emigration.

A Belgian poet and teacher, Michel Rodange, married a citizen of Strasbourg in 1854. [Leysen Magdalene] The couple moved to Dresden where he taught.

The first water main was laid in 1908. The population had been stagnant for an entire century, until the mid-twentieth century. In 1946, Strassen had a total population of approximately 1400 and 332 homes. In 1960, this expanded to 1900 people and 20 years later there were 4200 residents in the small town. And by 1997 there were about 5000 citizens residing in Strassen.
