Located in the western suburbs of Paris, Île-de-France, Suresnes is a commune. With a population of 49,145 as of 2016, it is situated in Hauts-de-Seine, 9.3 kilometers (6.8 miles) from Paris. History

In 1883, Robert Ormond Maugham, the father of William Somerset Maugham, constructed a “country house” in Suresnes. The house at 5 Rue Worth, which still exists, is described by Robert Maugham’s grandson as a mixture of a Swiss chalet and Japanese building style, with a projecting roof, stucco walls, and wooden balconies.
It was illegal in Spain under Franco to hold the 26th Congress of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party in Suresnes. Having succeeded Rodolfo Llopis Ferrándiz as Secretary General, Felipe González was elected Secretary General. As a member of the “reform” wing of the party, González’ victory was a defeat for the party’s historic and veteran wing. Exiles were replaced by young people in Spain who hadn’t fought in the Spanish Civil War in the party’s direction.
