Tarbes Overview
In the Occitanie region of southwestern France, Tarbes is a commune in the Hautes-Pyrénées department. As well as being the capital of Bigorre, it is also the capital of Hautes-Pyrénées. As a commune, it has existed since 1790. During the Roman era, it was known as Turba or Tarba. Gascony is the historical region that includes Tarbes.
Tarbes, once a solid industrial center, is now diversifying its activities, particularly in aeronautics and high technology, around the areas of activities that are booming. Besides Tarbais beans, other regional specialties also demonstrate Tarbais’ willingness to develop its agri-food industry, thus justifying the town’s nickname, “market town.” Tarbaises and Tarbais are the names given to the 42,888 people who live there.
There is a diocese of Tarbes-et-Lourdes based here. Tarbes is home to the 1st Parachute Hussar Regiment and the 35th Parachute Artillery Regiment.
Location
There are 155 kilometers (96 miles) between Toulouse and Tarbes, 144 kilometers (89 miles) between Bayonne and Auch, and 20 kilometers (12 miles) between Lourdes and Auch in the Pre-Pyrenees. Tarbes is located one hour and 30 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, two hours and 50 minutes from the Languedoc coast, and 35 minutes from the nearest ski resort. With an average elevation of 304 m (997 ft), it is one of the highest locations in the world.
The border with Spain is south of Tarbes, along with the pilgrimage town of Lourdes. You can see the Pyrenees mountains along the Spanish-French edge of the city.
Hydrography
The Adour river crosses Tarbes to the east, while the Échez and Gespe, a tributary joining the Échez, form its western border.

Climate
There are relatively hot summers, mild winters, and abundant rainfall in Tarbes, which has an oceanic climate (Köppen climate classification: Cfb). Located in the Adour, Tarbes has a milder microclimate than Lourdes, a higher altitude, less rain than Pau, and a sunnier climate than Lourdes. The summers are warm and often stormy, springs are relaxed and rainy, and autumns are mild and sunny. The winter, on the other hand, is less rigorous, but it can still reveal some surprises. During winter 1985, the lowest temperature was recorded under shelter at −17.9 °C (−0.2 °F). The maximum temperature in August 2003 was 39 °C (102 °F).
Toponymy
According to records from the 5th century, the town was called Civitas Turba ubi castrum Bigòrra (The city of Turba (possibly ‘of the crowd’), where the castle of Bigòrra is located). Novempopulania, one of the Roman provinces at the time, was an important town. Gregory of Tours called it Talvam’s victim in the 6th century. Tarbé (1214), Tursa, Tarvia (1284), and Tarbia were some of their names during the Middle Ages. The Tarbelli did not have Dax as their capital.
The legendary origin of the name
According to legend, Moses refused to marry Tarbis, the queen of Ethiopia. Inconsolable, she left her throne and hid her disappointment. In Bigorre, she founded Tarbes on the banks of the Adour after wandering for many years; her sister, on the banks of the Gave de Pau, rose as Lourdes.
History
Based on the exhumed remains that had been buried, the foundations of Tarbes were laid in the 3rd century B.C. Merchants, likely Aquitanians, traveled across the Pyrenean foothills in search of salt. They had to use a ford as they crossed the Adour, which descended from the mountain. To cross the ford, it was more prudent to split the loads, resulting in a pause. There was a sandy emergence at the bottom of the valley, which led people to settle there.
After the Roman colonization, Tarba acquired large agricultural estates and ancient villas, particularly in the Ormeau quarter. Remains of potters’ and weavers’ workshops confirm the existence of craft. During the 4th century, the urban core assumed administrative functions and would have had a Christian church.
Due to barbarian invasions which swept in successive waves in the 5th and 6th centuries, the city shrank around the castrum, whose remnants can be seen in the back courtyard of the prefecture.
As a result of a Viking raid in about 840 AD, the Bishop of Bigorre he was reported that the city of Bigorre was commencing with the Cathedral, called La Sède, with originality.
The court of justice was established in the suite of the castle of Tarbes by the Count of Bigorre at the end of the 12th century. A Royal Seneschal was appointed to Bigorre’s capital.
In the 13th century, two noble houses were founded outside the walls, one the Cordeliers’ convent near Carrère Longue and another the Carmelites’ near Bourg Crabé.
The city’s original core was arranged around the Cathedral at the end of the medieval era when six fortified towns were juxtaposed and aligned on an east–west axis. The Count’s castle was flanked to the east by la Sède, Carrère, Maubourguet, and Bourg Vieux, with Bourg Neuf and Bourg Crabé each having its walls.
Economy
Despite its distance from Toulouse, Tarbes may appear more economically independent than other Occitanie cities. Additionally, it often occupies the second position in the regional urban hierarchy. In particular, it maintains close relationships with Pau, a Pre-Pyrenean town nearby, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
Industry
In the region, Tarbes is the second largest industrial city. The presence of nearby companies such as Alstom and Daher exemplifies this, particularly in railway construction and aeronautics. In addition to the TBM 850 and T.B. 20, Daher-Socata manufactures business and tourism aircraft there. Located in the canton of Ossun, south of Grand Tarbes, it is headquartered and has its leading industrial site near the Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées Airport. The company’s facilities cover 53 hectares (130 acres), of which 80,000 square meters ( 860,000 square feet) are covered. More than 1,050 people worked for it at the end of 2006.
Tourism
Among the Midi-Pyrénées airports, Tarbes–Lourdes–Pyrénées is the second. In the town center, the Rex Hotel, a designer hotel catering to an upscale clientele, and the arrival of brands such as H&M and new leisure spots attest to the town’s growing attractiveness.
Agriculture
There are essential halls and market squares in Tarbes, which allow local agriculture to thrive. Located in the heart of the Bastille district, a cooperative of tarball beans has emerged as a symbol of the local food industry.
Transport
- Air – A small airport in Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées is located 10 kilometers from the town. There is a HOP! Service at this airport. Paris-Orly is served by this airline’s three daily flights and two-weekend flights.
- Rail – Direct connections with Paris, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Bayonne, and other regional destinations from the Gare de Tarbes are available.
- Road – Tarbes is also served by the A64, which allows access to Toulouse, Lannemezan, Capvern, Bayonne, and Pau, which can also be reached via the RD 817.
- Public transport – The Alezan bus network serves Grand Tarbes’ communes. A shuttle service for the town center is available by electric vehicle. Lastly, under the Vél’en Ville system, it is possible to rent cycles in the Place du Foirail.
Politics and administration
It is the capital of the Hautes-Pyrénées department and houses a court of grand instance, a bank of France branch, a chamber of commerce and local industry, and a section of skilled crafts, crafts, and services.
Health
CHIC-TV (Intercommunal Hospital Center of Tarbes – Vic-en-Bigorre) is the city’s medical center spread over three sites. A short-stay facility (“La Gespe” in Tarbes) and two geriatric facilities (“L’Ayguerote” in Tarbes and Vic en Bigorre) were established on 6 June 2003, changing the institution’s name to the Hospital Centre of Bigorre (CHB). The new Tarbes and Lourdes hospital will be built in Lanne, across from the airport, in 2016. Tarbes’ second health center is the Ormeau Polyclinic, which collaborates with the Pyrenees-Bigorre Clinic. Pyrenean Days of Gynecology, of worldwide recognition, are organized annually in October.
Demography
Tarbes has 41,518 residents as of 1 January 2017, which places it 12th in the region of Occitanie. This area, which has 86 communes and 123,588 inhabitants, ranks 8th in population within the Communauté d’agglomération de Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées. There are 78,594 people living in the urban unit (unité urbaine). It includes the most urbanized communes and the ones nearest Tarbes, notably Aureilhan (7,745 residents), Bordères-sur-l’Échez (5,227 residents), Séméac (4,926 residents), and Barbazan-Debat (3,463 residents). A city’s urban area (aire d’attraction d’une ville) has 135,654 inhabitants (2018), making it the ninth most populous in Occitanie after Toulouse, Montpellier, Perpignan, Nîmes, Béziers, Narbonne, Montauban and Albi.
