Thionville Overview

Thionville is situated in the Moselle department in the northeastern part of France. A suburb of Yutz is located on the right bank of the river Moselle, opposite the city.

History

As far back as the Merovingians, Thionville had been settled. The Germanic Alamanni occupied the region during the Western Roman Empire’s collapse. Theudonevilla or Totonisvilla was its Latin name. A royal palace was constructed here by King Pepin the Short.

This place was the site of the Synod of Thionville, which began on February 2, 835. Louis the Pious was reinstated, his previous convictions reversed, and Ebbo was deposed as Archbishop of Rheims. A total of 43 bishops attended the Synod. According to Ebbo, Louis was not guilty of the crimes for which he had been indicted and deposed as Holy Roman Emperor on February 28, 835.

The Holy Roman Empire ruled the area from the 10th century onwards. Until 1462, it belonged to the House of Luxembourg and then to the Duke of Burgundy until 1477. It was part of the Habsburg empire between 1477 and 1643.

Upon his return from his pilgrimage to Rome in 1153, Eskil, Archbishop of Lund, was imprisoned at Diedenhofen (at the request of the Archbishop of Bremen?).

As part of the Thirty Years’ War, Thionville was besieged in June 1639. A French annexation of Diedenhofen took place in 1659. Under the direction of Sébastien de Vauban, fortifications were built.

As part of his failed attempt to defeat the French Revolution and restore Louis XVI to the throne, the Duke of Brunswick besieged Thionville in 1792. In 1792, Condé’s military émigré expedition against Thionville left François-René de Chateaubriand for dead.

Alsace-Lorraine became a Reichsland after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 when the newly created German Empire annexed it by the Treaty of Frankfurt. Diedenhofen once again became Thionville and prospered. Several large neo-Romanesque buildings were built in the city during the German Empire. As part of the German Army’s efforts to protect the new Reich, a fortress line was constructed between Mulhouse and Luxembourg. Fortresses protecting Metz and Diedenhofen were the centerpiece of the Moselstellung.

Economy

As a result of the presence of iron ore in the area, the area around Thionville has relied heavily on heavy industry. 1898 marked the opening of the first giant steel mill in Thionville.

Steel mills have closed in large numbers since the 1970s steel crisis, and only a few remain in operation. An increasing number of Thionville residents commute to Luxembourg (15 km from Thionville).

Transport

Several regional destinations are accessible from the Gare de Thionville, including Luxembourg, Metz, Nancy, Paris, Strasbourg, Brussels, and Zürich. Thionville is connected to Luxembourg and Metz by the A31 motorway.

Demographics

In the first half of the 20th century, Thionville’s population grew mainly due to industrial development in the Upper Moselle basin. The economic slowdown and steel crisis of the 1970s caused population stagnation in the town and surrounding area. The graph and table below refer to the population of Thionville proper in the given year based on its geography. Several former communes were absorbed into Thionville in 1966, 1969, and 1970, including Veymerange, Volkrange, Garche, King, and Utrange.
