Tilburg Overview

Tilburg is a city and municipality in the Netherlands, in south-central Brabant, with a population of 222,601 people. It is the second-largest municipality in North Brabant and the seventh-largest in the Netherlands.

The Universities of Tilburg, Avans, and Fontys are all found in Tilburg, providing students with plenty of choices for higher education. Every year, the largest festival in the Netherlands takes place at Tilburg. It’s called Roze Maandag (Pink Monday) and has a lot of representation of the LGBT community.

History

Tillburg began from the name Tilburg, which was first mentioned in documents dating from AD 709. However, after that, there were only says several centuries later. The region later referred to as Oost-Tilburg, started with few settlements in the Middle Ages, with one of the earliest communities being Eastern Tilburg. This village is centered around a small rocky hill, which has been turned into ruins of a medieval castle. It was probably made of wood and became derelict after only a few hundred years. Tilburg Castle was first built in the 900s. By the 1400s, it had been destroyed, and stories of it being haunted were circulating. Today, all that’s left is a few remnants of its moat in Oisterwijk.

Successively, the manorial rights fell into the hands of several lords of noble lineage. They derived their income from fees, fines, and interest payments collected from the serfs.

The site of the castle of Tilburg, a favorite entrenchment of Jan van Haestrecht, is still in the area. It was first mentioned in historical documents in 1360. The castle in Liege was built when the city was known as St. Lambert instead of the present-day name of Liège. The court was pulled down to make way for a new factory, but people still use the term to remember this crucial part of their history. From its inception, Tilburg’s history has been deeply connected to its predecessor, Goirle. The city’s roots can be traced back as far as 1803, with the demolition of a factory in 1895. Providing an authentic replica in 1995 signifies this strong and long-lasting relationship between the two cities. In that year, Tilburg had about 9,000 people living within it. It was first recognized as a city on 6 July 2009 and celebrated its 200th anniversary the following year.

Modern history

In the 1980s, many wool factories that used to occupy the locations had been turned into houses. This happened when Henk Letschert was mayor of Tilburg. This tree was chopped down to make room for a parking lot. Protests arose because the tree was still alive. After the Pieter Vreedeplein reconstruction, which occurred in 1609, there were plans to plant a descendant of the original lime tree. Three trees were added, with one being killed. A lime tree was removed as part of a redevelopment project in 1997. Some other trees were also removed, and after some time, in November 2011, they died. The current tree is different from the last one and is unrelated to any line of descent. A new policy allowed three buildings in the Netherlands to build higher up into the sky. There is a skyscraper called Interpolis, then there is another called Westpoint Tower, and lastly, there’s one called StadsHeer. Westpoint tower has an altitude of 469.5 feet and was the tallest residential tower in The Netherlands until the Montaysiä in Rotterdam surpassed it. The third Haestrecht quarter residential tower is called De Vogelkooikes for its shaped balconies and is also part of the Haestrecht quarter. Its nickname comes from this, and you can also find it in the StadsHeer article!

Demographics

The population of Tilburg today is 222,601 people, which is expected to grow to 217,000 by 2025. Out of these people, according to the city council’s estimations, 23.3% (47,964) are from outside of Tilburg. If you were born outside the Netherlands or your parents were born outside the Netherlands, you are considered to be of foreign descent.

Religion

  • Roman Catholic (60.7%)
  • Atheism (21.7%)
  • Dutch Reformed (7.8%)
  • Islam (4.8%)
  • Reformed (4.4%)

Climate

Tilburg experiences an oceanic climate similar to almost all of the Netherlands. Western Brabant is known for its thunderstorms, with rain or short thundershowers falling on over 31 days each year.

Economy

Tilburg has made progress since the 1960s in different industries. This helped the city avoid poverty and had government support to save it. IFF is a chemical company that has factories in Tilburg. In the 1980s, Fujifilm came to Tilburg. Interpolis and C.Z. are insurance companies that call Tilburg home. Tesla, a US-based electric car producer, has been based in Tilburg since 2013. In 2016 they were the first to offer their range of cars for sale to the public on an online platform and continue to expand their European production presence with offices in the nearby town of Vossenberg, north of De Reeshof.

One of the industries in Tilburg is the transportation/distribution industry. This is due to its convenient location, being a center of logistics and services in Benelux and on the main transport corridor between Antwerp. Waalwijk-Tilburg has been a rapidly growing logistics hotspot for years, with an expanding number of Dutch businesses choosing to set up their headquarters there. In 2017, it finished third in the Netherlands.

Beverages

Schrobbelèr is a local liqueur with an alcoholic percentage of 21.5%. It has a moderately-sweet flavor. A famous shot known as “a Jaeger Bomb” consists of Jägermeister combined with two shots of Jagermeister and a soda, mixed with topping off a glass that is high but smaller than the chalice glass. Tilburgian entrepreneur Jan Wassing invented the drink in 1973, and they had been experimenting with a drink with a lower alcohol percentage for his customers who sometimes had a sensitive stomach.

That’s how it was successful. Distilling liquor has some new twists and turns. Loven does this in Tilburg, where Schrobbeler Ltd is located in Eindhoven. Without the final vowel, it looks like Loven was spelled wrong. The name of this beer, found in the Netherlands, is derived from Carnival. Some say it comes from converting a textile industry process known as Schrobbelaar into something delicious. The beer itself is low in alcohol and reasonably cheap.

Sports

The local football team is Willem II. Its name comes from the town where it was founded in 1692 and was known as Willemstad until 1925.

Tilburg Ten Miles is an annual course that takes place exclusively in Tilburg.

Students also participate in different sports like rowing and hockey. Three field hockey clubs in Tilburg play in top national leagues.

You’ll love skating at the 400 m skating rink located in Tilburg. You can get on the ice hockey field, too. It’s a great place to experience both winter sports! “The hockey team Tilburg Trappers dominated the Eredivisie (Dutch Premier League) for years before moving to the Oberliga, the third tier of ice hockey in Germany.” The hockey team Tilburg Trappers had notable success playing at their new home of the Oberliga.

Transport

Tilburg has three stations: the centraal, universiteit and reeshof. The latter was built to connect that district. Intercity trains don’t stop at the center, but they do at the university and reeshof. Since the opening of Tilburg station in 1968, the name of Tilburg West Station was its name until it became Tilburg Universiteit Station in December 2010. After 40 years of looking back, this point came and went quickly. A fourth railway station was planned for Berkel-Enschot, becoming part of Tilburg. It used to be an independent station in the past until 1938. A train station in Udenhout is still on the line to ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Both stations are located in the northeast corner of the municipality.

Veolia managed the bus system in Tilburg for about ten years before it became publicly available for everyone. Since public transportation is accessible, children and seniors benefit from it greatly. Veolia’s high quality of service and convenience kept them in operation from 2005 to the present day. Arriva is now the only primary public transport provider in Liverpool, including taxis.
