One hundred seventy-six thousand one hundred ninety-eight people live in Toulon, making it the 13th-largest city in France. The city is the center of France’s ninth-largest urban unit, with 580,281 inhabitants (2018). Following Marseille and Nice, Toulon is the third-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast.

History
The coast of Provence has been inhabited since at least the Paleolithic era, according to archaeological excavations, such as those at Cosquer Cave near Marseille. About the 7th century B.C., Greeks from Phocaea, Asia Minor, established trading depots along the coast, including Olbia at Saint-Pierre de l’Almanarre, south of Hyères, to the east of Toulon. As early as the 4th century B.C., Ligurians settled in the region.
During the 2nd century B.C., the people of Massalia (present-day Marseille) asked the Romans for assistance in alleviating their region. As a result of their defeat, the Romans began setting up colonies along the coast. At the present location of Toulon, a settlement was founded with the name Telo Martius – either for the goddess of springs or from the Latin word for the base of a hill, too – and for the god of war, Martius. The local sea snail, called murex, and oak acorns were used to produce the purple color used in imperial robes at Telo Martius, one of the Roman Empire’s major dye manufacturing centers. The town gradually changed its name from Telo to Tholon, Tolon, and Toulon as the harbor became a shelter for trading ships.

Toulon’s climate is subtropical, with a Mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification: Csa), with hot summers and mild winters, abundant sunshine, dry summers, and occasional torrential rain. Temperatures are moderate due to their proximity to the sea.

Toulon has a conservatory (Conservatoire TPM, part of Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Toulon) that teaches music, theater, dance, and circus, as well as a art academy called École supérieure d’art et de design Toulon Provence Méditerranée. Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables features Toulon prominently, whereas Jean Valjean spends nineteen years in hard labor in the infamous bagne of Toulon. The antagonist in the novel, Javert, is also born in Toulon. To the right of the entrance to the Old Harbour, a portion of the old bagne, or prison, where Jean Valjean is said to have been held, still stands.
Transport
Trains run every 15 minutes during rush hour from Toulon’s Gare de Toulon station to Marseille, Nice, Paris, and other regional destinations. The main port of departure for ferries to Corsica is Toulon, and Toulon-Hyères Airport is the closest airport. Toulon and Marseille are connected by the A50, while Le Luc is connected to the A8 by the A57.

Two of the city’s most successful clubs are the rugby union team R.C. Toulon and the women’s handball team Toulon St-Cyr Var Handball. In the French basketball championship, Hyères-Toulon Var Basket competes in the second division.
A tournament for under-21 football is held annually in the city.
