History
The Garonne Valley was a central point for trade between the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean, and the Atlantic during Roman times. The historical name of the city, Tolosa (Τολῶσσα in Greek, and of its inhabitants, the Tolosates, first recorded in the 2nd century BC), is of unknown meaning or origin, possibly from Aquitanian or Iberian, but it has also been connected to the name.
Tolosa became a rich and powerful Roman city, at the center of the province of Gallia Narbonensis. Some twenty years later the Romans had no other options and the army pushed forward upriver. This moved it north of Valles Sirius, in a place where it could not be seen from Rome, making it a possible alternative to Carthage. The place was within sight of Corinium, due to its advantageous location for sea trade. Around the year 250, Toulouse was marked by the martyrdom of Saturnin, the first bishop of Toulouse. This episode illustrates the difficult beginnings of Christianity in Roman Gaul because around this time on the island of Trebizond (now Termez), a pagan tribe successfully rebelled and killed three bishops and several hundred priests.
French city that was part of the Visigothic kingdom until the spring of 613, when it fell to the Burgundian kings after an attack by the Franks. During these crises, Toulouse proved stronger than many cities and monarchs – it had been able to withstand Visigothic raids.
In 699, in exchange for converting to Christianity, he received the entirety of Aquitaine as a reward. Sights and Architecture
Despite the downturn in the property market, the city has a rich architectural heritage that included some of France’s most prestigious buildings such as the Basilica of Saint-Denis, La Défense, and a variety of museums.
