France’s Centre-Val de Loire region includes Tours as one of its largest cities, and it is the prefecture of the Indre-et-Loire department. One hundred thirty-six thousand four hundred sixty-three people lived in Tours as of 2018, while 516,973 people lived in the entire metropolitan area.
The city of Tours is located on the lower reaches of the Loire River, between Orléans and the Atlantic coast. The Tours Amphitheatre is one of the largest theaters of the Roman Empire, having been named Caesarodunum by its founder, Augustus. With connections to the Merovingians and the Carolingians, Tours is a National Sanctuary known for the Battle of Tours in 732 AD. The Capetians made the Livre tournois the currency of the kingdom. It was from Tours that Saint Martin, Gregory of Tours, and Alcuin were all born. Tours were once part of the former French province of Touraine. Historically, Tours was the first city where silk was produced. Louis XI wanted it as a city of art with the School of Tours and the Loire castles under the Valois Kings. After the French Wars of Religion in the late 18th century and again in June 1940, the prefecture was partially destroyed.
Etymology
There is a common folk etymology for the word “Tours,” which claims it derives from Turonus, Brutus’ nephew. As a result of Corineus hunting in the king’s forest without permission, Turonus was killed during a war between Corineus and Goffarius Pictus. Tours were built around the grave of Turonus, who is said to have been buried there.
History
Tours were a vital crossing point over the Loire river during Gallic times. During the 1st century A.D., it became part of the Roman Empire and was called Caesarodunum (“hill of Caesar”). Turones, the original Gallic name, was transformed into Citta Turonum and Tours in the 4th century. Construction of the Tours Amphitheatre took place at this time.
Around 380–388 AD, Tours became the capital of the Roman province of Lugdunum, dominating Maine, Brittany, and the Loire Valley. Saint Martin of Tours, a bishop who shared his coat with a naked beggar in Amiens, was an important figure in the city. Tours, located on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, was a major center during the Middle Ages because of its importance in the medieval Christian West.
Gregory of Tours wrote the Ten Books of History in the 6th century after a fire destroyed a cathedral in 561. In the early 6th century, Saint Martin’s monastery benefited from patronage and support from the Frankish king, Clovis I, which significantly increased the influence of the saint, the abbey, and the city of Gaul. The Carolingian Rebirth occurred in Tours during the 9th century, thanks to the abbot Alcuin of Marmoutier Abbey.

Climate
For a northern latitude, Tours has a mild oceanic climate. Due to its inland location, the summers are often hot, with temperatures reaching 25 °C (77 °F) or higher, while the winters are mild due to the influence of the Atlantic air masses.
Language
Tours (Les Tourangeaux) was renowned for speaking the “purest” French before the French Revolution. Touraine’s pronunciation was traditionally considered the most standard pronunciation of French until the 19th century when Parisian bourgeoisie pronunciations became the standard pronunciation. The French court lived in Touraine between 1430 and 1530, explaining this. All of the kingdom’s official documents were written in French, the court’s language.
Transportation
With extensive rail (including TGV) and autoroute connections, Tours is now a launching pad for visits to the Loire Valley and royal châteaux.
The TGV runs through Tours, and a two-and-a-half-hour drive to the west coast of Bordeaux is possible. It then runs along the Mediterranean coast to Avignon, Spain, and Barcelona. These lines also serve Lyon, Strasbourg, and Lille. TGV trains from Tours to Paris take less than an hour, and Charles de Gaulle Airport takes one and a half hours. Trains that don’t terminate in Tours use Gare de Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, the town’s central station.
