There is a city called Trenin in western Slovakia, around 120 km from Bratislava, located near the Czech border in the central Váh River valley. Having a population of over 55,000, it is the eighth-largest municipality in the country and the seat of the Trencin Region.
Trenčín appeared on the Ptolemy world map around 150 CE under the Greek name Leukaristos. A Roman inscription was carved on the rock under the present-day castle in 179 CE during the Marcomannic Wars between the Roman Empire and Germanic Quadi, naming the place Laugaricio. The Roman presence in Central Europe was considered the northernmost for a long time.
Trencin has been inhabited since ancient times. Trencin Castle is a typical medieval fortified castle on a rocky outcrop above the city. Roman inscriptions dating from 179 AD are the most notable feature of Trencin, a town in Germany that was part of the Marcomannic Wars, a series of wars between the Roman Empire and the Germanic Quadi and Marcomanni. This is the oldest known reference to Roman soldiers in central Europe (until Mucov and Olomouc forts and marching camps were discovered just north). It is now known as Laugaricio.
Trencin is one of the possible locations for Samo’s Empire’s capital in the 7th century. In 631, the Slavic and Frankish armies fought at Wogastisburg (Vogast castle) on the Vah (Vegas) river.
Trencin Castle may have been built during the Great Moravian era. Boleslaw I, the Brave of Poland, ruled the region at the beginning of the 11th century. Stephen I of Hungary conquered the area in 1017, and it remained part of Hungary until 1918. In the kingdom of Hungary, Trencsén county was centered at the castle by the end of the 11th century. In 1241, the court resisted the disastrous invasion of the Mongols as one of the few stone castles in the country. It was owned by Jakab Cseszneky, royal swordbearer, in 1263, but King Wenceslas I took it from them in 1302 because they supported his rival Charles Robert and gave it to Matthew III Csák. In 1302-1321, the castle was the seat of Matthew Csák, the powerful magnate who controlled much of Slovakia today. In addition to challenging King Charles Robert, Matthew Csák established his foreign policy and maintained a large court. In 1335, Bohemia, Hungary, and Poland signed the Trentschin Treaty.
