Troyes Overview

In the Grand Est region of north-central France, Troyes is the capital of the department of Aube. It lies on the Seine river about 140 kilometers (87 miles) southeast of Paris. Orient Forest Regional Natural Park is in the Champagne wine region near Troyes.

The population of Troyes in 2018 was 61,996. An estimated 170,145 people live in the agglomeration community Troyes Champagne Métropole.

History

As early as 600 BC, prehistoric evidence has been found in the Troyes area, suggesting that the settlement developed there. The city grounds have been excavated for Celtic artifacts, and Celtic grave mounds have been found nearby.

Tricassium was called Augustobona Tricassium in the Roman era. Several highways crossed here, including the Via Agrippa, which led to Reims on the north and Langres on the south. As well as Roman routes also connected Troyes, Poitiers, Autun, and Orléans.

Augustus separated tricasses from the Senones in this civitas. Some scattered remains of the Gallo-Roman city of the early Empire have been found, but no public monuments have been found aside from traces of an aqueduct. As the Late Empire progressed, the settlement’s size decreased. This originated in the French Troyes, known as Tricassium or Tricassae.

As early as the fourth century A.D., the people had become Christians, and the city was designated a diocese. In its hagiographic legend, its bishop Lupus (Loup) offered himself as a hostage to save the city from Attila. Before Troyes became a center of commerce in the medieval era, several centuries passed.

Attila and the Roman general Flavius Aetius fought the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains (also known as Troyes) nearby in 451 AD.

Initially, the current Cathedral stood on the same site as the early Cathedral. Louis the Stammerer received the imperial crown from Pope John VIII in 878. Due to Norman’s depredations, Troyes became Champagne’s capital at the end of the ninth century. Until the late eighteenth-century Revolution, it was the capital of the Province of Champagne. A renowned library and scriptorium were built at the Abbey of Saint-Loup.

Climate

During the summer, Troyes experiences short, warm, partly cloudy days; during the winter, it is very cold, windy, and mostly cloudy.

During the year, the temperature usually ranges between 32°F and 78°F, rarely falling below 20°F or rising above 89°F. It would help if you visited Troyes from mid-June to mid-September to enjoy warm-weather activities.

Troyes is the historical capital of Champagne; Montgueux is the closest vineyard. You won’t find this rosé outside of Champagne… Enjoy a glass of Champagne, locally produced wine, or the famous rosé des Riceys…

Is Troyes worth visiting?

Even though Troyes is only one of the most popular tourist destinations, visiting it could be a pleasant surprise. The city center is very charming, even if at first glance there are no monuments or attractions that seem to “attract” mainly, but it traces a good deal of France’s history.

Best Things to Do in Troyes (France)

Troyes Cathedral

Despite being built in different eras over 400 years apart, Troyes Cathedral is a rhythmic structure inside and out. The building is entirely gothic and one of Europe’s most beautiful churches, not just in France.

Maison de l’Outil et de la Pensée Ouvrière

A joyous renaissance mansion dating back to 1550, one of Troyes’ prettiest sights is Hôtel Mauroy. With a half-timbered turret, the Hôtel is a stone, brick, and timber building around a courtyard.

Église de la Madeleine

The oldest church in Troyes dates back to the 1100s, but the nave and choir had to be rebuilt in the 1500s and 1600s. The church’s exterior may seem understated, but its interior is opulent, making it a must-see in the city.

Old Troyes

You will feel transported to a different era when you visit Troyes’ historic center. Initially, there were two districts: Cité, around the Cathedral, home to nobility and clergy.

Ruelle des Chats

A deep ravine formed by overhanging corbelled houses blocks out all daylight. There is an alley that was named after a cat that could jump from one building to the next.

Musée d’Art Moderne

This museum in Troyes’ former episcopal palace is one of France’s best provincial modern art museums. With paintings, sculptures, illustrations, and decorative items, you’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of French art in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Musée de Vauluisant

The building is known for its twin circular towers, and you’ll gain a deeper understanding of Troyes after seeing its interior.

Hôtel-Dieu-le-Comte

This former hospital dates back to the 1100s, although the current design dates back to the 1700s. Inside you’ll find classrooms, lecture halls for the University of Troyes, and a quirky museum.

Musée Saint-Loup

Housed in a 17th-century abbey, the Saint-Loup Museum contains Troyes’ archaeology, natural history, and art up to the present day.

Basilica of St. Urbain

Pope Urbain IV was born in Troyes in the 13th century and built this church for his patron saint in 1262. It was situated right where his shoemaker father had a cobbler’s shop.
